The redstone is to stop entity cramming.
The box is for spawing mobs, you can replace the mob spawners with your xp farm. Since there is a villager, the zombies will go tword it. Make sure to place the villager below the killing area so the zombies/drowned don't swim up.
Play in the latest 1.13 snapshot or 1.13 when it comes out.
