Two of the most iconic jets of an era fight against each other above the jungle of Vietnam.
The McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II was built and designed as an interceptor and fighter-bomber. The Phantom was introduced in 1960 and was used extensively during the Vietnam War as an air superiority fighter for the US Air Force, Navy and Marines. 5 people became fighter aces during the Vietnam War by achieving 5 aerial kills. A total of 107,5 aircraft have been shot down by F-4s during the Vietnam War, including 66 MiG-21s. The aircraft is still in service with the Japanese Air Self-Defense Force and the Republic of Korea Air Force.
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 "Fishbed" is a fighter and interceptor aircraft built in the Soviet Union. The aircraft was introduced in 1959 and also saw combat during the Vietnam War with the Vietnam People's Air Force. 13 VPAF pilots achieved Ace status during the war and a total of 56 aircraft were destroyed by VPAF MiG-21s. The MiG-21 also broke some aviation records including the most-produced supersonic aircraft with +11 000 units built in the Soviet Union, China, India and Czechoslovakia.
This scene shows an F-4 Phantom II fighting against two MiG-21s. The F-4 has fired two AIM-9 air-to-air missiles and one has hit a MiG-21 on the tail. The pilot ejected but the plane is breaking into pieces and falling to the ground. The other MiG-21 desperately tries to escape the incoming missile. Who will win?
I really enjoyed working on this project, maybe I'll make more aircraft on a bigger scale. I'm also quite happy with the F-4's nose art, which turned out to be quite cool in my opinion.
