A reconstruction of the former grand temple, once located at the center of Tenochtitlan, Mexico. This massive Aztec temple was the most important temple in the entire city, housing two altars. One was dedicated to Huitzilopochtli, the god of the sun, and Tlaloc, the god of rain. Human sacrifices were often performed at the top of the temple, with heart extraction being the main method of sacrifice to the gods. It is unknown as to exactly what this temple looked like, but from what archaeologists have gathered, this seems to be the general idea of the grand temple's appearance. After the Spanish siege of Tenochtitlan and capitulation of the Aztec Empire in 1521, almost all of the city was plundered and destroyed, including the sacred complex, where the grand temple was once located. Today, only the foundations remain of the once grand structure.
