If gravel in MCEdit is not given any gravity, placing a block may effect it and cause all gravel to fall. Placing cobblestone or any other solid block under the gravel will prevent this from occurring.

I used MC-edit to get the gravel circle. It falls if you dig downwards trew all the gravel. ;-)
