This map was created in Minecraft version 1.14.4.
I built it with the Excalibur resource pack, so some textures may not make sense if played with another resource pack.
I just wanted to create something quick and small today. I don't know a ton about early medieval Irish history, but I know enough, so I figured I'd give a ring-fort a shot today.
Well off or aristocratic Irish families were building this type of ringfort (Called a dún) for themselves in significant numbers from about 550 to 1000 A.D. according to carbon dating.
This is a family ringfort. It was typically the residence of a single family, and their dependents (slaves, exiles, foster children, guests). This was a protected farmstead, a circular ditch was dug and the dirt was piled in the middle to create a raised space, which then might then be ringed with a dirt wall and palisades. The purpose of a ringfort was to provide security to the family and their assets: their grain was stored in Shilohs within, and their cattle was brought in from grazing at night to prevent cattle theft.
It was a humble life. The typical early medieval Irish family lived in just a couple of wattle and daub huts or stone roundhouses with dirt floors.
