Kowloon Public Library 九龍公共圖書館 The Kowloon Public Library （Chinese: 九龍公共圖書館） is a 12-storey public library located right in the centre of the Kowloon peninsula. It was previously known as the Kowloon Central Library （Chinese: 九龍中央圖書館）, serving the district as the main library. The library took on its present name in 2000 in anticipation of the opening of the new Hong Kong Central Library on Hong Kong island. The library is now managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and is still one of the major public libraries in Hong Kong. A renovation of the library began in May 2005 in which facilities were refurbished. The exterior of the library was also refreshed with the original dark brown walls repainted white and green. Library Planning Standards 圖書館規劃標準 Public libraries in Hong Kong are classified into 5 types: Central libraries (中央圖書館), Main libraries (主要圖書館), District libraries (分區圖書館), Small libraries (小型圖書館) and Mobile libraries (流動圖書館)。 According to Hong Kong Planning Standards and Guidelines (香港規劃標準與準則), district libraries are to be allocated to districts with a population of 200k or more and main libraries are reserved for districts with at least 400k residents. Different types of libraries provide different levels of services and service coverage, and their allocations are mainly based on a district's population. Way before the emergence of the Hong Kong Central Library, the main libraries were named the central libraries. To further empower the significance of such a newly built flagship library on Hong Kong island, all the other libraries are renamed as public libraries to anticipate such changes.
