Binary Decoder

Prototype

Hi, welcome to the circuit which took me seven months to design. I designed this a while ago, and I learned virtually all of my circuit engineering and designing from this, so I feel nostalgic writing this.

By the way, this converts from binary to decimal seven segment display.

I might add a tutorial later, but right now Io m not sure how to explain it very clearly. The best way to learn how it works is to look at a physical version. If anyone has any suggestions, Io d be happy to talk to you, and give you credit. A better way to deal with inter-digit carries would be extremely useful.

Thanks for reading! I hope to add more to this when I can.

Additional Notes

The MCedit schematic uses the old MCedit. I use the digiex.net minecraft launcher to launch minecraft 1.1 (which still uses McRegion), import stuff, then I update the world.

Sure. I guess it went away because that channel went away. I have exams for the next few days, so it'll have to wait a bit (maybe I should be studying right now.)

hey great project. this is the first small binary to decimal decoder that actually works well in a quite small design ive seen. ive been looking for a 16bit decoder but ive decided to start my own. I've kinda used this idea and design to start mine but ive got some suggestions and bugs ive found. first when every lever but the 4th bit is pulled it comes to be 241 instead of 247. i believe it carries on to the next adder when it should also carry to other adders before it. i think it could possibly use system to count the number of carries and carry it to the proper amount in order to reduce the number of adders neccesary. Im not that good at redstone terms and i hope my explanation make sense. hope this helps.
btw add some redstone lamps all in front, its alot easier to see. +1 diamond

Thanks! There are actually much better binary decoders out there. I don't know how they work, but searching +3 algorithm might help. Hans Lemurson has a video of one on youtube. Thanks for the bug and ideas, I'll keep those in mind for when I finish it.

Thanks. I tend to develop addictions to specific projects within my redstone addiction. This was one of them.

okay i wanted to say u its cool , but i cant , due to: half of a year ago i was only noob , but at this time i ve builded 8 bit decoder ( 8 wires in , 4 x 7segment displays out ) n it was much much much smaller than your decoder thingy -__-" ( ur decoder is as big as my 4 decoder togetter)
but anyway , gave u diamond n good job btw

Thanks for the diamond :]

I actually built this a while ago. Maybe I should mention that in the article. This is still a prototype, but I'm not working on it right now. It might be possible to reduce it to 2 lines of adders, some of which would be half adders. The main problem is inter-digit carries between adders. If I do eventually make it that small, it'll be about twice as large as decoders which use the +3 algorithm (which are pretty small), and much faster.

I don't think you should take this guys comment too seriously.

-First of all, 8-bits only decodes to 0 thru 255 at most 3 decimal digits, yet he said that he used 4 7-segment displays.
-Second, he said 'i've builded' which is pretty retarded.
-Third he thinks that while he was a noob he built a very advanced component.
-Forth, for all the nice work he's done; he hasn't uploaded a single Redstone related project.
Most likely he built some little piece of shit and figured its equivalent to a BTDC

This really is impressive : )
