For Preserving World Heritage Contest, I choose to make the leaning tower of Pisa. It is one of Pizza del Duomo's site found in the city of Pisa, Italy. I built it within 2 weeks with the help of structure blocks, these websites and a bunch of google images(mostly exterior) as references. Compatible for Java 1.13+
HISTORY TIME
The leaning tower of pisa began its construction in 1173, intended to be a vertical bell tower to showcase Pisa’s power during that era. It went through two phases designed by four architects and engineers:
Construction are often delayed for decades due to wars occurred in Pisa before it was finally finished by Tommaso Pisano in 1399.
The tower began tilting while constructing the 3rd floor. Workers noticed how the unstable soil has made the foundation base shifted diagonally. However, the delayed construction from wars helped to buy time for the affected soils to strengthen the tower from collapsing. This last until construction was completed when the tower started to lean slowly.
As time passes, architects tried numerous method to stop the leaning but failed. In 20th century, the bells installed at the top floor had to be silenced fearing the then unstable tower collapsed. It is also closed from public for safety reason. Workers tried to inject the foundations with cement grouting which helped to stabilize the tower temporarily. They proposed an idea that had been raised in the 1960s, which was to extract soil from the high side of the tower.
During the Second World War, the Allies came to believe that the tower was being used by the Nazis as an observation point. An artillery strike on the tower came close to being ordered by a US sergeant, but upon seeing the structure’s beauty he chose not to.
In 1987, the cathedral site was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Despite this, and the tower’s popularity as a tourist attraction, the tower is not opened to visitor until May 2001, when the proposed ideas has completed in success. Engineers believed that the Leaning Tower of Pisa will be stable for at least 200 years.
