Hello guys, I bring you my latest World Painter map. This took me only around one and a half hours to complete so if this feels unfinished its because of that. The map is medium sized and consists of a lake, a river leading threw the lake, several hills and mountains, dense forests cover most of the map. Hope you enjoy :)
As usual, if you use this map for public use please give credit to me by giving a link to this project.
Note: The map bounderys are messed up by a 30 block height difference so not ideal for survival

The picture doesn't do it much justice, but what made the area unique is that it has the beautiful mesa-styled colors of the famous Southwest while also having a LOT of very green trees. Combine it with a crystal sky with a smattering of clouds and you have one hell of a landscape to walk. Perhaps take your proejct in that direction should you wish to update this?
To get a better idea of what mesas are like, visit this wiki article about them:

This should help in making more realistic terrain - even when it is fantasy terrain, it helps to understand geological "rules" first to make it easier to suspend disbelief when looking at fantasy terrain. Basing fantasy on real life is the easiest way to go because we all understand real life on a subconcious level. Otherwise, you have to create a seperate set of rules for your terrain to follow throughout the map - like floating islands in the sky for example. They aren't real but we accept and like them because they follow their own set of rules.
You also mentioned the border being messed up by a 30 block drop. This is why my maps are usually islands of various sizes to make them more survival friendly - BUT you still end up with sheer cliffs when you come up to newly generated parts of the map. I think it's a curse you have to just accept and live with when it comes to WorldPainter aside from trying to smooth out those edges via WorldPainter or MCEdit after generating the map in-game around those edges. It would be a ton of work to make it as seamless as possible and I don't know if anyone bothers to do that to be honest.
