This project is my personal version of the Mines of Moria and is inspired by the original Godcraft server project. For more details on all of that, read the Start entry in the update log. The word chunk, when used in the log does not refer to the 16x16 chunks in Minecraft, but rather, it refers to a section of my project (a tile really) that is 25x25, 15x15, or some combination thereof, with the larger ones being empty floor, and the smaller ones being the columns. The project currently has semi-consistent help from Vashti, my fiance, MagicBULLET, my brother, and sometimes Hibbsi. Currently, there is no video for this project, though I may make one later when the project is more complete. There are several other projects that are located on the same server, though they are all simply started, and are awaiting the completion of this one.

As a note, this project is not designed to be accurate to the Lord of the Rings lore that it draws its name from, but is more designed to capture the feel of the massive columns and scale seen in the movie and artwork, with inspiration taken from my own thoughts. The server is open on a whitelist basis and the map will not be made available for download. Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments for this project and remember to watch the update log for the latest changes.

Additional Notes

Updated 9/28/2011:

Using Bukkit v935with Worldedit 4.6 for superpickaxe command in the excavation. All materials are gathered and forged, not given.

The remaining 20% of the project was completed with MCedit as the world that the project was created in is being retired.

Texture pack is Zar's Awesome Pack or the default textures.

Server is online and whitelisted. Check the link for more information. Posting whitelist requests here will result in me banning you on my server. Currently the whitelist is open for new applications.

Completion : 09/28/2011 3:58:24 pm9/28/11

Moria is finished. I have completed the main hall with the help of MCedit for the last ~20% of the excavation, as well as moving torch holders that I discovered were not placed straight. The current schematic is only the main room with the columns and does not include the grand hall, tunnel, or ESC. Those will be added at a later time and included in a super schematic. With the current schematic, since it is a straight rectangular box, you will be able to import it directly. When the final version is released, it will be trimmed to exact size and will be filled with wool instead of air so that you can place it into a mountain without any problems. There is a single north facing torch missing from the file, if you find it, please let me know where it is in relation to the staircase so that I may correct the problem. If you notice any torch holders on the roof that are not lined up properly, please let me know that as well. As my server world is going to be regenerated, I have changed my mind about providing a schematic for this build, since it will no longer be available for some time on my server.

New Images : 07/16/2011 12:23:32 am7/16/11

I have updated the main image and added a diagonal shot of Moria to show the size of it. If I backed up any further to take the diagonal shot, the wall started getting eaten, on Far render distance. No progress changes since the last update.

Left Side Complete : 07/14/2011 4:27:06 pm7/14/11

The left side of Moria is now complete, including re-surfacing the columns and wall. Vashti has helped tremendously with digging as well as some help from Halucid, Boomer, and Leefield in moving material to the storage areas. The amount of Cobblestone in the Excavation Storage Chamber has exceeded the capacity of a single floor and there is more than 750,000 blocks of cobblestone stored in the chests in the ESC. There is a third floor planned for the massive storage facility which will be added should the need arise. The current storage chamber holds a massive 440 double chests, which took clear-cutting a huge portion of the land above Moria to create, as well as the entire forest that was made for this exact purpose. Current progress is ~78%

South Half Nearly Complete : 07/09/2011 8:24:14 pm7/09/11

The southern (left) half of Moria is nearly complete. All of the columns have been completely carved and the junk between them has been mostly removed. Work on the right side will begin soon, once all of the left side has been cleared. The Moria design contest is still accepting entries to design the front and back walls. Current progress is ~72%

Work Update : 06/28/2011 10:55:12 pm6/28/11

We have some new helpers in the form of Boomer_and_Tank, and someone else... that I forgot at the moment, this post will be updated when I remember. Almost all of the columns on the Left side are complete and the space between them is fast becoming empty as well. About half of the junk between the columns on the left side is gone. Almost all of the columns and junk on the right are incomplete. Current work will not complete in time for the planned livestream on Saturday (7/2). Deadline is moved back to August, which is more realistic. New project released on the server is the Fortress of Armengar. Check that out too. Contest for murals is still open and taking submissions. Current progress is ~68%

Speeding Ahead : 06/24/2011 4:02:51 pm6/24/11

The Mines of Moria project is being fast tracked for completion, originally for the Planet Minecraft portion of the Weekend of Minecraft stream, but since that was placed on hold, it is now for the Planet Minecraft stream. This will be held on 7/2 at 2pm EST. Hopefully. As you might have noticed from the Server Listing, the Moria project is being moved to the Monolithic Supercomputer from Space as soon as the remainder of the parts arrive and are assembled. Work is moving rapidly and a great deal of space has been cleared. When the main area is complete, I will be asking for opinions on whether I should remove the torches in the roof of Moria. The wedding between Antiqua and GrizzlyAmish should also be happening soon in the Mines of Moria and the other Moria projects on PMC have spurred me on to improve my project later after the main area is complete. As a reminder, the contest for making a mural on the walls is still open in the community challenge section of the forums. Current progress is ~65%

Screenshots : 05/27/2011 9:54:54 am5/27/11

I have added screenshots of the Excavation Storage Chamber's second level, before and after the chests. I have also added a screenshot of the old fake chunks showing that I added some trees after getting tired of it being barren for so long. The fake chunk screenshot is a taste of what will come with my project to be created above Moria, which is a very thick forest with a village or city inside.

Excavation Storage Chamber Expanded : 05/25/2011 7:07:10 am5/25/11

The Excavation Storage Chamber (Where all Moria materials are placed) is currently being expanded because the original chamber (recent versions were 110 and currently 220 double chests) is not large enough. I have decided that it is time to add a second level and have dug below the original chamber and plan on doubling it in size. The new chamber will be another 220 double chests, making for a total storage space of ~1.5 million blocks. This will take 440 wood or 1760 planks to create all of the chests. This floor will be differentiated by having cobblestone surfacing and a dirt floor, as well as a new warp to the second floor directly under the first.

Roof Complete : 05/22/2011 11:00:41 pm5/22/11

It has been more than 2 weeks since the last entry and many things have happened to Moria. First, some non-building news. The Mines of Moria will be hosting the wedding of GrizzlyAmish and Antiqua, Yay! I have also started a contest asking people to design murals for the front and back walls, including designing a doorway for the future underground city. In working news, the roof level is completed, thanks to some hard work by Doomworks and Vashti who were helping. There were several caves to the surface that needed to be sealed while the roof was being worked on. Since the roof is finished, the final stage is to cut the material that is between the roof and the floor. This should not take too long though it will be awesome when it is done. And now for some current stats. The Excavation Storage Chamber has been re-organized, as has the shed, and all cobble, dirt, gravel, sand, and overflow coal have been placed in the ESC. All other materials are stored in the shed including several chests of coal. Total cobblestone that is currently in the ESC is more than 650K with another ~50k having been used to create the walls of the Fortress on the server. There is about 75k dirt and another 60k gravel with only 7k sand and 17k coal total (including shed coal). Iron and gold that has been mined from Moria is being used to create the Kelewan train system, with over 1.2km of track laid. Current stores of iron are 8k and 1k gold, in bars. Also available are an additional 3.5k iron ore waiting to be smelted. There were 7112 torches used on the roof of the main Moria chamber to light that area, though the floor is lit with lava underneath a glass walking surface since the chamber is 36m high. Moria is 225 blocks from front to back and extends 200 blocks to the right and to the left for a total width of 425 blocks. Current time to build this has been 6 months and it is coming close to being done. I will try to list at least one update per week until the project is done, most likely giving excuses instead when it is not done on time. Current progress is ~55%

Upgrade Complete : 05/06/2011 3:47:59 am5/06/11

The floor is complete. All of it. This marks another milestone in the creation of the Mines of Moria. Currently, there are two sections being worked on. The southern end is having all of the intermediate material removed and the columns resurfaced. This has allowed for our 5th column to be completed, meaning that 10% of those are done. We have also started cutting out the roof on the north end of Moria. As mapped out long ago, there have been a few sections within Moria where the mountain outside actually came low enough to be in the roof of Moria. As additional work on the server, we created a train station, the first stop designed as a test traveling from Central Heights to near the Tower and Shed outside of Moria. The entire northern roof has been measured out and the section that was dug too far has been filled in. Vashti was a huge help in finishing the floor section while I sealed up the old area that was not supposed to be there. Also helpful were Hibbsi and MagicBULLET in finishing the floor area and starting some of the northern roof. This project is screaming along and will now have 2 regular builders working on it. Vashti will continue cutting the southern columns out and removing all of the junk in the center while I work on the northern roof. If Hibbsi or MagivBULLET have time they will probably help with the northern section. We also have managed to fill in a large cave to the east of Moria that went from the surface all the way to the floor. We will eventually be sealing all of the cave sections that are above the northern end of Moria to keep people from digging into the roof and falling to their deaths. The Excavation Storage Chamber has been expanded again and the visual look of the room has been improved since there are now chests against the roof for materials. The project is going quickly and I hope to have it done before August. Current progress is ~41%

Crap. : 04/18/2011 4:50:47 pm4/18/11

I have just noticed a massive, incredibly large failure in my counting skills. One that has cost many hours of work a long time ago. The fake chunks that I created to hold the roof area for Moria, are not necessary. This is because I have made Moria 40 blocks too long on the right side, by adding an extra column. This is most likely due to me not counting the already cut column at the roof level when I started, and did not start in the center line like I should have. Not only that, but I matched the bottom area with the top, making this again bad. Fortunately, I have caught the fact that the right side is 6 columns wide instead of 5 before we got to excavating the area around said columns. I will need to take some time to seal this area and cut a new back wall channel on the roof. I will also most likely drain the ocean that I filled with sand to get the sand back. In better news, the removal of correct junk has been moving well and about half of the right side is done at the bottom level. This project will be moving slowly in future weeks while I finish final projects for school, and should move slightly faster afterwords.

The Other Half : 04/11/2011 11:57:21 pm4/11/11

The right side has begun. I outlined the entire bottom on the right half, including carving the bottoms of all of the columns to 3 meters. Currently the efforts are being concentrated on cutting out the extra crap now and sealing the huge cave systems that are under this area. They are being filled in to several blocks deep. The corners were verified by digging down from the correct corners that exist at the top of the mines. The top area will be the last portion that is carved out before the complete excavation begins. The ESC is nearing complete filling and I am about to be forced to either expand again, which will be vertical this time, or start filling the other side, which is the more likely option at the moment. Current progress is ~35%

Left Side Complete : 03/29/2011 12:00:00 pm3/29/11

Sort of. The left side has been completely outline and all of the columns have been carved on the top and bottom. The lava lighting on each column as well as the lava lighting around the perimeter is completed. The floor and ceiling are resurfaced and the lighting is complete at the roof as far as I know. A small area has been cleared from the ground up to the roof that might be visible in the first image (the one that is cut partially to the floor). The work has been hurried along by the best assistance in the world in the form of MagicBULLET and Hibbsi, who both helped at one point or the other with resurfacing the floor and clearing the area.

Current work has moved to the right side and I am in the process of laying the groundwork. The entire right has had the lower perimeter cut and torched out, and the column guides have been started. In the process of making the guides, I have dug into several caves and more than doubled my store of diamonds from the bottoms of those caves. Currently, the caves simply have a small bridge across them for the floor level of the lines that were being cut, and said lines have few, if any, torches laid out. This will be changed when I remove the torches that are marking out the left side and finish resurfacing the walls and columns themselves. The digging will be fun for this right side since the bottom area is filled with caves, and there is a large section of the top area that is filled with sand. Anyway, expect great things by the end of the year. Current progress is ~32%

More Digging : 03/17/2011 12:00:00 pm3/17/11

So the Moria project has been worked on for a ridiculous number of hours so far this week, and the floor is cut and resurfaced for about 60% of the left side. After the entire left side is completely cut, the lava lighting will be added. Currently the channels are just cut as markers. As soon as that is done, I will check the columns and walls and then probably dig out the center area at least to the 3rd column back and 2nd column to the left. Screenshots will come later, since there is not much to see that is different, and 3 blocks high does not show much. Will probably slow down soon as schoolwork makes it's demands, though that remains to be seen. Also, more help from Hibbsi, who is making this go much faster.

On another note, since the Excavation Storage Chamber was enlarged, I had a massive amount of ore that I smelted down to make 171 iron blocks and 23 gold blocks. Yes... that says blocks. I also have 1.5 double chests of coal, and nearly 300,000 cobblestone so far. Statistics are fun for everyone and I have about 6 full stacks of iron blocks that were gathered from the massive excavation that I have done so far. By my guess, I have cut out 15% of the space that needs to be removed, though it could be as high as 20-25%. Current progress is ~29%

Hiatus Really Ended : 03/16/2011 1:02:44 am3/16/11

I have once again ended a long drought of not working on this project. From the last entry, I have done a massive amount of work that I have not properly documented. I have completed the left side of the roof level completely, resurfacing the entire ceiling on the left side of center and installing all the torches, carving all the columns, and making sure that the walls and columns are smoothstone on the outside. I have since removed the guide torches that I used and discovered an error or accidental deletion from MCEdit work that was done to bring some extra ocean to my ocean and add the Aetas floating city to the server. Since I have grown momentarily tired of the work on the roof level, I have begun my work on the same area of the ground level, which is completely outlined now. There were a couple hickups with me failing at measuring several times, requiring a section of the back wall to be rebuilt (only to the first column deep thankfully) as well as moving the bases of several columns over 5 blocks and the lava lighting attached to them. I have completely cut the bottom 3 blocks on all of the left side columns and I have also marked out the entire area. I have begun removing the intervening spaces and resurfacing the floor, but for now I am holding off on the lava lighting until the entire floor is done being resurfaced. In preparation, I am leaving the area for the lava trenches cut 1 block deep. The normal lava lighting is cut 2 blocks into the floor (1 for lava and 1 for glass) and the blocks on either side are replaced with cobble 2 blocks deep so that the dips in the lava don't look strange. Hibbsi has started helping me in the dangerous area of Moria (mobs can spawn in most of Moria for now) and has been a great help with the resurfacing and stuff. Another thing of note is that the Excavation Storage Chamber has been enlarged again (this is enlargment number 3), bringing the grand total of storage space to 220 double chests, of which nearly 80 are completely full of cobblestone. Images of the newly enlarged ESC will be uploaded soon. Current progress is ~28%

Hiatus Ended : 02/04/2011 9:05:57 pm2/04/11

The long absence of work on the Mines of Moria is over. Personal things have been dealt with and in the near future, the server will be moved to a computer that can offer twice as much RAM to the cause. Until then, I will continue chugging away at the same old place, and I will also be sorting out the magic of Bukkit and the pretty plugins that i have for it.

Server Problems and World Screenshots : 01/13/2011 12:00:00 pm1/13/11

With today's update to the player and server clients, hMod no longer works, meaning that it is no longer possible to teleport, be immortal, or use invincible supertools as I have been doing. I have taken the server ip down because I have no control over player permissions and actions, and have made it request only. All projects on the server except the Mines are on hold. I have also rediscovered Minutor, which is an awesome mapping tool that is better than cartograph because it can work in real-time, though it does not have an angled view. I have uploaded two screenshots of Moria using this program, one from above listing some of the nice things like the forest, spawn and shed, and another with cave mode enabled. Cave mode gives a black overlay wherever there is a cave below, and you can see Moria outlined in red. If you would like to help with the Mines, let me know and I might let you on depending on how well I know you.

Visiting Tour Groups : 01/11/2011 12:00:00 pm1/11/11

About a week ago, Skullcandy, with the help of several others from the community, started trying to create the survival server that he runs now, using hMod instead of what he had before on the creative server that he was hosting. While we were waiting for Skull to look some stuff up, I invited everyone to come see my server, which is now posted on the servers list and linked on this project. Many people got to see the project for the first time from the inside and I am proud of the response I got. I also got to show people around to some of the other projects that I am starting on my server. I ran into a small snag that came up because I had moved the spawn point and forgot about it, so instead of people spawning on the beach next to the mine, they spawned in the biomes out in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, Zeranny started helping MagicBULLET work on the ceiling and even helped me smelt all of the excess iron ore that I had been storing. We came out to more than 150 blocks of iron (the kind made with 9 bars each) which was pretty awesome. I am thinking about modifying my texture pack and changing the way I have the different material storage blocks looking (iron, gold, and diamond). Anyway, I also had Cyprezz, kacboy, pedrocs and several others come to visit the server, as well as a tour for Skull later in the day. Please let me know if you logged in and helped out so that I can include you in the assist credits for the project. Anyways, the server settings have been slightly modified and now the default setting for new users has been slightly changed so that the default user is not allowed to build, simply because I never turn the server off. If you would like to help with the Mines, or maybe start something else epic, like the Angkor Wat that is being built on Skull's server, let me know. I will not hesitate to ban you in every possible way should you try and ruin my work or someone else's though so be nice, and remember, all non-nether materials are legit on my server. In working news, we have completed almost the entire ceiling level on the left side and will soon start constructing the right side of the roof level. Current progress is ~24%

Layout and Boundaries : 12/31/2010 12:59:46 am12/31/10

There have been a few staggered changes to the project recently, as noted in the 'Chunk Pains' entry. As I noted earlier, the back right corner happens to be outside of the original terrain generated. I did notice that my walls were a single block away from the boundary of the new chunks on the right and so I created a shell of what looks good enough to pass as old chunks over the area of ocean removed from the desert. This covered the cobble wall that I built as well as the section of sand that collapsed. The section that is outside of this new set of fake chunks will be covered with sand at a later time. The section of ocean that is inside the shell was filled with gravel and I replaced the surface of the water with cobblestone to save myself the time of doing it when that area is excavated for the roof. It will be of some pain, since several of the columns will need to be created by hand, but they might only need part of themselves to be created. I forgot to take pictures of the before when I created the fake chunks, but I used the ascend command from the WorldEdit plugin to get to the corner and take an after picture. I also took a picture from the corner that I connected to by creating a column to give an areal overview of the fake chunks. I modeled the wall to look like a normal wall of the surrounding exposed chunks. In news about the left side, the tops of all of the columns have been carved (as far as I can see) and MagicBULLET and I have begun working on carving out the lighting. We are more than half done and have outlined everything with torches as explained in one of the older entries. A new method of extracting the lighting block locations has made the process faster, as I remove the blocks that cannot be because of torch alignment, and then remove the blocks that are in the wrong half. (I cut all of the light holders and all the locations where they intersect and then remove the intersections). I might have mentioned that the Excavation Storage Chamber has experienced its third expansion and I have screenshots of the new chamber placed next in the sequence to the older ones. Current tasks still are to finish the roof level and then start working on the floor again. After the roof is finished that is. I noticed an error in our creation of the last step of floor lighting around the main pathway, though it may be turned into something else if I decide to add lava to the back wall. In case it was not noted before, the floor from the stairs leading into and out of the great hall has been changed to cobble in a pathway that will make people want to continue on. Current progress is ~22%

Fancy Ideas : 12/17/2010 3:20:35 am12/17/10

This log entry is separate from the other log entries and does not detail work that is being done, but rather work that I might do, or ideas that I am thinking about trying. I have a thought that it might be awesome to build a large piece of art against the back wall in obsidian and place windows filled with lava within it. I also am thinking about filling some of the columns with lava and having spiraling windows of glass from the roof to the floor showing the lava off. I am also thinking of adding an additional area to the build, A lava forge. The lava forge would probably be accessed from underneath the main stairs and I would probably just have a set of iron doors at the very back, as well as a second staircase running even lower, since the floor of the mine sits at about 30 blocks from void. The lava forge would be a large area like some of those that you see that have pillars of lava falling from the walls or ceiling and a large lake of it as well. I am not sure how well these would work, but I think it would look awesome just the same. Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments.

Chunk Pains : 12/17/2010 3:19:48 am12/17/10

The change in the terrain generation algorithms with the inclusion of biomes into the game has left some people with great cliffs upon their worlds. These cliffs are rather massive and I mentioned in the 'Edge of the World' log, I have come up against that cliff. What I did not know at the time was the fact that my fortune with those chunks being close to the back wall but still beyond it was not to last. Today, MagicBULLET and knightshade13 were able to get on the server and we all got to get together and hang out. We started working on clearing more of the roof level and I decided to cut the boundary of the Mine. I carved the front wall (that the main stair is connected to) all the way to the left and torched it out (laying down my marker torches to let me know how far I was). I got to the edge on the left and moved back one unit (25 blocks for the empty squares) and had MagicBULLET cut it out. While he was working on that, I carved the remaining 3 columns for the first row and then began work on carving the left edge of the project boundary. When he was done clearing the area, MagicBULLET went to work carving the back boundary to meet me. Since he was not torching as he went, he reached the end before I did and discovered that there was a desert at the corner that was right next to the ocean. Fortunately, we did not need to drain a section of the seas because my portion of the edge met with his right near the water's edge. When I got to him, I noticed that I messed up my torches and went back to fix them, as well as torching the work that MagicBULLET did. Both of my helpers then left the server to sleep and I started cutting the boundary on the right side. I discovered a very large underground waterfall/river while doing this and sealed it, as well as bucketing a small lava spring that I found directly at the boundary. When I reached the right side, I was still in the pre-biome chunks of the world. When I moved to cut the right edge to the back however, the biome chunks gave me a nasty surprise in the form of a section of ocean. This was a time-consuming setback as I laid a wall of cobble at the bottom of the ocean so that I would not only have a piece of land to stand on, but also a wall on either side of my boundary to keep the water out as I dug and torched. I also happened upon a section of desert that had a cave running under the sand, which I collapsed. I had to re-cross the ocean for the back edge of the right boundary and sank a great volume of sand for that purpose. When I discovered the first piece of ocean, I found out that the roof level of the Mines also happens to be even with sea level. I plan on making the roof look like a section of desert in the new biome chunks and have fortunately had some experience with draining large volumes of water, which I will explain in the other project when I get around to it. The boundary for the entire Mines of Moria project is now complete at the roof level and the walls themselves will be refurbished to smoothstone when I get the chance. The current business will be to finish off the rest of the column's tops and to complete the roof lighting. I will work on the floor level after that. Current progress is ~18%

Expanding Effort : 12/16/2010 5:00:00 pm12/16/10

The Roof excavation and floor excavation have been completed for the central aisle all the way to the tentative back of the mine and was stated in the previous update. The ladder has been moved, which is obvious as the old location would be in the middle of the current screenshot. The back wall has been started (filling in cave holes anyway) and will continue. MagicBULLET became slightly over-enthusiastic about cutting away the gap between floor and ceiling and started working on another section. This work is on hold because the current project is to finish more of the roof and floor area before clearing out the in-between. I have expanded greatly the roof area to the right of the two excavated column rows, adding lighting to about 8 chunks of work. The current progress may stagnate for a short period of time pending travel and other things, though I hope to be working again before too long. Current progress is ~ 17%

Updates and Mods : 12/06/2010 5:00:00 pm12/06/10

Huge update today. According to the update timestamp on this project, it has been almost a week since i posted any updates for this project. Part of the reason for this gap was the 'ghosting' bug that caused a person that died to be unable to interact with the world on the server. This was fixed in recent patches and it was able to update all of my mod software and texture patching now works properly. I also started dabbling in plugins for the server mod. I downloaded several plugins including the WorldEdit listed in the additional notes section but have disabled them because they are not useful to my current purposes with building the mines. One thing that I am thinking about is my use of the super-pickaxe command, which pretty much makes my pickaxe work like classic instant destruction of blocks. This has let me excavate a massive area (that the plugin would have allowed me to do with a single command) and i am feeling ambiguous about its use. For one, I am still carving everything by hand, albeit much faster than a standard diamond pickaxe can, and i am refusing to use the functionality such as copy/paste/replace that is available within the WorldEdit plugin, but I am not sure if it constitutes cheating or something. It does cause the pickaxe to not degrade at all, since it is used only to detect hits (I think) and never actually mines the block. Anyway, please let me know if this use makes the project less legit so I can have some feedback. Anyway, on to the update. MagicBULLET has been able to log in consistently and has been assisting in the excavation of the mines. In entry 5, We managed to reach the back wall of the project scope, though that was just from a single boundary of the 8 or so sections. With this set of work, we cleared out the rest of these sections on the floor level and installed the appropriate lava lighting in the floor, as well as excavating the bottom 2 layers of the columns on either side of this pathway and laying down their lighting as well. I decided that the front image for this project was still not good enough and came up with the idea of cutting a section of the roof all the way to the floor. I decided that i was going to cut the main central road area all the way back to the second column, as well as the area around and between the first two rows of columns as well. The front screenshot reflects this change, which was accomplished after about 12 hours using the super-pickaxe command. The floor area at the main road was also cut using the pickaxe command from the second column to the back wall (behind the 5th column's row). The excavation storage chamber has been enlarged with several full stacks of logs(not planks) being crafted into chests to provide the space. This new storage area has been mostly filled again because of the speed of excavation of the materials with the super-pickaxe command. We ran out of glass and half-steps and so MagicBULLET was nice enough to stand in the toolshed and smelt some glass (the entire wall's worth of full stacks) as well as refill the chest holding the smooth cobble by smelting some of the stone from the storage chamber. The front image for this project, as well as new images of the floor level and the storage chamber have been added and were taken with the fog turned off. Also uploaded is an image of the entrance tunnel that was accidentally deleted before the new image upload scheme was implemented. As always, thanks for examining this project, and I look forward to finishing it for you guys. Let me know if there is anything that you would like me to work on in the future and I will see what I can do once this is done. Current progress is ~16%

Edge of the World : 11/28/2010 5:00:00 pm11/28/10

MagicBULLET was again able to log on and help me this past working update. While he was away, I was able to do some more work and if have finished the central area of the roof all the way to the proposed back of the mine. It is so deep that, from the center, neither end can be seen with normal fog. I decided to use a hole in the wall to dig a staircase to the surface and discovered that my biomes terrain had generated about 10-15 blocks lower than the old terrain and that i was only 6 blocks away from that edge at the back of the mine, though the roof was still below ground. When MB logged in, we were able to finish clearing the center section and got to work mapping out the same ending spot on the ground level. We discovered some pretty large caves but we were able to get it mapped, though only the outlines of the blocks are there, and we moved the ladder that you can see in the main project image to the center block of the back wall, all the way in the back, all the way to the floor level. Some work was done on another project that I might upload later, but I still need to take pictures before I can post it. As always, thank you for checking out my work. Current progress is ~14%

Friendly Assistance : 11/21/2010 5:00:00 pm11/21/10

Work has been done recently, with MagicBULLET being able to visit my humble server and help me do some more work. We continued working on the roof level and moved on from the excavated sand pits. The second sand pit (the one that I covered over in the last update) was emptied before MagicBULLET arrived, though there was plenty of work to do. We did a large section around where the original sandpit was and smoothed it out towards the main wall, expanding the area we covered. MB was trained in my floor-planning method of laying torches to find out where the boundaries of an area are and I accidentally cut the edge off of a column top. We found ourselves working against our first major section of caves that went above the ceiling and below our workspace. The caves were filled if they were above to a reasonable degree, while those going below just got a layer of dirt or cobble so that we could work. We managed to finish the tops of several more columns and rehabbed a large portion of the surface to hide any caves in the area, since those caves would be covered within the mine and look suspicious. We started doing some of the rehab with MB laying out the roof level that is seen in the cobble in one of the gallery images and I followed behind, laying dirt near the surface or cobble if it was deep in a cave. All in all, the area coming up will be a frustration because there are extensive caves and I have spotted several other sand pits that will need emptying before construction can continue and some caves that will need to be filled, covered, or sealed. Since most of the construction involved rehabilitation of the land above the roof line, there was not enough work to merit moving to the 15% mark of completion, though the roof is now deep enough that normal fog distance makes it impossible to see the main wall from the current construction area. The next plan is to dig the central pathway, both at the floor and roof, all the way to the proposed ending depth and then move the current ladder to the center of the back wall. For those wondering about the other assistant that helped, knightshade13, his contributions were the mining that he performed in an actual mine with MB while i was starting the initial tunnel seen in the entrance screenshot. The mining that they did helped provide the diamond necessary to get the original tools, before the /give command was used. They also provided fuel for the wall of furnaces in the toolshed to make the mountain of smoothstone used to patch up blemishes in the wall and the redstone used in the torches in the hall. As a note, all material used is legit gathered, with the exception of regenerating tools through the server item dropping bug. Current progress is ~12%

I've seen countless things in Minecraft. I've seen some literally jaw-dropping creations to things that shouldn't even be called art. Even though this build is very simple, there is just something about the Mines of Moria that just gets the adrenaline going, so bravo, you made me happy with this build ;)

This was made before true creative was a thing. There was flying and instabreak for some of it, but there was much hand-carving as well.

This was made long ago. I kinda want to have another large underground structure like this again, but it would take some time to make. I should probably post some projects for the stuff that I have worked on on the official server.

The schematic is from an ancient version of the game, and this would probably not look good in an adventure map because of the size (the room is like 400*250 if I remember correctly). You are certainly welcome to work on your own version at a more reasonable scale though.

once again, that would be no. I will update the schematic soon with better area so that you can import more than just the main room. It will involve replacing all of the air in the project with wool so that you can import the project without air and then replace all of the wool with air to get the space. or you could light it on fire, your choice. I will post an update log when I do this.

Well, if you would read the description, you would have noticed that it is not directly inspired by the movies, and has no inspiration from the books. It is named because the depiction shown in the movies had a massive hall area with huge pillars. There will be no Balin's tomb or any of that, it is simply a name that pays homage to a massive underground structure that I saw in the movies and heard of a large underground project being named after it that had a similar theme.
