History up to November 1908:

The Mishima-class were the former Admiral Ushakov-class Coastal Defense Ships of the Imperial Russian Navy. Mishima is the former Admiral Senyavin, built by Baltic Works in Saint Petersburg and was commissioned sometime in 1896. Her sistership Okinoshima is the former General-Admiral Apraksin, built by Admiralty Shipyards also in Saint Petersburg and was commissioned sometime in 1899.

Both ships, along with their sistership Admiral Ushakov were part of the Third Pacific Squadron under Rear Admiral Nikolai Nebogatov, tasked with reinforcing the Far East along with the Second Pacific Squadron under Vice Admiral Zinovy Rozhestvensky during the Russo-Japanese War. At the Battle of Tsushima (27th to 28th May 1905), both ships were largely unengaged and Rear Admiral Nebogatov surrendered his ships to the Japanese except for Admiral Ushakov which was scuttled after combat.

Admiral Senyavin was commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy on 6th June 1905 as Mishima. Since the ship received less damage, she was in good condition and is present during the Invasion of Sakhalin (July 1905). After a gun explosion sometime in 1907, her Russian weaponry were replaced by Japanese ones. The ship participated in both the 1908 Fleet Maneuvers and the Imperial Naval Review as part of the temporary 3rd Fleet under Vice Admiral Baron Sadayasu Tomioka who is also the commander of the Ryojun Naval District. The commanding officer of the ship is Captain Tsunekichi Uemura from the 14th class of the Imperial Naval Academy who commanded the ship since September 1908.

General-Admiral Apraksin was commissioned into the Imperial Japanese Navy on 6th June 1905 as Okinoshima. The ship has a taller funnel and only had three 10-inch main guns. The ship was present at the Invasion of Sakhalin (July 1905). The ship participated in both the 1908 Fleet Maneuvers and the Imperial Naval Review as part of the temporary 3rd Fleet under Vice Admiral Baron Sadayasu Tomioka who is also the commander of the Ryojun Naval District. The commanding officer of the ship is Captain Kishichiro Osawa from the 14th class of the Imperial Naval Academy who will be departing on 20th November 1908 as the ship was scheduled to be drydocked.
