It seriously depends on the project. I'm a big proponent of Perler and Hama bead art, so usually if I need inspiration, I hit the Google Image Search and go to town on whatever I can find. For some of the bigger stuff, I've had to actually set up a block-by-block Microsoft Excel spreadsheet for what needs to go where, and the most complex stuff can usually come out of careful use of "ThinkMinecraft.com" Crazy times! :P

Oh! im a real big fan of pixel beads and stitching like that but i have been using paint.net and actually creating my own sprites recently. very very complicated but the fun part is making them :D

Hahahaha, there separate projects as in time put together and its made into one task. i actually have been using images made by pencil, resizing them, then outline with oil sketch with a tool. then i touch up the entireeee thing by hand one pixel art a time. its actually quite fun. :D
