The Grand Bureau de Poste Impériale (Grand Postal Office) is located in the rather new city district surrounding the cathedral Sacre-Cœur de Lucrécy.

With an ever increasing number of letters sent, both official documents, commands as well as private correspondence, the small decentralized postal offices throughout the city could not keep up with demand. First plans called for a remodeling of the former city hall of Lucrécy in the center of the historic districts.
But with the new forms of transportation arising, such as trains and airships, a headquarter in the inner city area wouldn't be reasonable. Some board members were afraid the new postal transportation routes would be beyond street capacities in than area.

Alternatively the committee proposed a building at the current location. Not too far away from the palace and the parliament or the city center, but far enough away for additional traffic to not get stuck in traffic jams.

With new building techniques for high rising structures, proven with the construction of the adjacent cathedral, the building now features a high tower with docking stations for up to four airships. So the building itself is able to receive and distribute letters and packages via chariot, ship or airship as well as sendings brought in by citizens in the halls of the first floor.
The floors above the ground level are mainly office spaces and used for sorting letters. Letters dropped off by airships are transported downwards via a tube system which also distributes a bunch of letters to each floor of the tower for further sorting. Smaller tubes are used to carry some amounts of sendings to their destination differenciated by adresses and further transportation method. For example, important buildings like the palace and the parliament have their own tubes, making the mail carriers for these buildings obsolete.

The architectual style of the building could be described as brick based monumental baroque with splendid ornaments. This rather extravagant design is rare amongst city founded public buildings. But the mayor of Lucrécy, Gaston Meryeux, saw the post service as one of the most essentional duties of a city and the most prestigious one.
Therefor he chose this design, which consists of two main building parts. Due to the unique shape of the property the building features 4 different view facades.
The one facing the Place de'l Impératrice Belle (Place of Empress Belle) is a symmetric facade with a risalit in the center crowned by a baroque gable featuring curlicues and a lantern in the center of the building. This lantern sits on top of a round atrium at the heart of the building and is executed with a glass dome to enlighten the inner staircase around the atrium. Each side ends in an oriel which itself is topped by a dome ceiling and is completed by a huge lantern. In front of the main entrance and service level at the ground floor there is an arcade segmented in various barrel vaults.

The facade in direction of the cathedral is dominated by the splendid gable facade, which takes up the whole length and is just framed by the two oriels. The small gap between the gable facade and the airship tower is compensated by a small oriel and a small terrace level at the third floor. The tower itself consists of four structural parts. The base is a square in shape and hosts the main entrance at this side with a porticus spanning a single story, adorned by statues of lions. This segment ends at the fourth floor right at the terrace and turns into the octogonal shape of the next segment as well as four hollow lanterns at each side spanning over three stories.

This second segment is nine stories high in which the facade steps back a few times to give the tower a slimmer appearance. To increase this effect, the subdivisions of the facade and monumental pillars are often at least two floors high.

The third segment is comprised of three stories hosting the ramps for the airships. These are made of iron framework and jointed at the floor beneath and connected via steel cables to the facade above.

The fourth segment is the huge dome made of glass and iron which is held by an almost gothic styled iron framework ending in four pinnacles holding the iron lantern on top of the glass dome.

The facade facing the palace is dominated by the tower and the attempt to have an symmentric view with just half the length of the opposite side. Except the just one sided oriel and the slightly visible dormer behind the tower this attempt succeeds. With the absence of a huge gable or risalite, this side is dominated by the wooden arcade at the ground level for the processing of postal chariots and the two story high dormers framed left to right by two lion statues, each holding the coat of arms of the city and the statues featured segments below their throne.

The river side is almost identical to its opposite side with the exeption of the tower now being in the background and the facades curvature, which follows the natural river bed.
