O mais emblemático património histórico perdido no Brazil, o Palacio Monroe nasceu como symbolo da Republica Velha no intuito de marcar as reformas urbanas de Pereira Passos durante a Belle Époque. De início, o palacio foi construído na Exposição Internacional de São Luís de 1904, no estado de Missouri, nos Estados Unidos, para apresentar ao mundo o que as pessoas iriam ver caso visitassem o Brazil, e também para apresentar o café brazileiro na epocha. Após a exposição foi desmontado e apenas a cúpula foi transportada para o Rio de Janeiro. Vale destacar que a proposta de Sousa Aguiar na epocha sempre foi que o palacio fosse do Rio de Janeiro e não para a exposição, e apenas construído na exposição para propósitos citados acima. O pavilhão também foi utilizado na Terceira Conferência Pan-Americana, foi séde provisória da Câmara dos Deputados, foi hum dos principaes pavilhões na Exposição Internacional do Centenário da Independência do Brazil em 1922, sendo o pavilhão da Comissão Executiva, foi séde do Senado Federal athé 1960 e foi séde do Estado-Maior das Forças Armadas athé 1974. O palacio de cunho eclético, misturando os estylos neobarroco e neoclássico, sofreu hum duro golpe em 1976, quando o architecto modernista, Lúcio Costa, enviou hum dossiê ao DPHAN exigindo que o conjuncto architectonico da Cinelândia não fosse tombado. O DPHAN acatou em partes o pedido e retirou do tombamento apenas o Jockey Club, o Derby Club e o próprio Palacio Monroe. No mesmo período houve huma intervenção no metrô e muitos dizem que precisava ser demolido, o que não he verdade, o MetrôRio desviou o traçado para salvar o palácio. Também houve protesto do Jornal O Globo exigindo a demolição do palacio. Diz-se também que foi demolido por Geisel (presidente na epocha) por vingança pessoal, o que não passa de hum boato. No lugar ficou a Praça Mahatma Gandhi, e athé hoje os cariocas sentem falta e gostariam que o palacio fosse reconstruído.

The eclectic palace, mixing neobaroque and neoclassical styles, suffered a severe blow in 1976, when the modernist architect, Lúcio Costa, sent a dossier to DPHAN demanding that the architectural ensemble of Cineland was not listed. DPHAN partially complied with the request and withdrew only the Jockey Club, Derby Club and the Monroe Palace from listing. In the same period there was an intervention in the subway and many say it needed to be demolished, which is not true, MetrôRio diverted the route to save the palace. There was also a protest by O Globo newspaper demanding the demolition of the palace. It is also said that it was demolished by Geisel (president at the time) for personal revenge, which is nothing more than a rumor. In its place was the Mahatma Gandhi Square, and to this day cariocas miss it and would like the palace to be rebuilt.
