aboliu a escravidão em 1888.
em 1864 casou-se com Gastão, o conde d'Eu,
eles tiveram 4 filhos juntos
(Luísa Vitória, Pedro de Alcântara, Luís
e antônio de Orléans e Bragança).
em 13 de maio de 1888, Sua Alteza aboliu
escravidão pela Lei Áurea,
famosa frase: "Se mil outros tronos
eu tivesse, mil tronos eu perderia para acabar com a escravidão!"
e foi o que aconteceu, pouco mais de um ano após a
fim da escravidão, a monarquia caiu sobre
15 de novembro de 1889, com a ajuda de proprietários de terras escravistas.
foi expulsa de sua terra natal e viveu no exílio em
França até
14 de novembro de 1921, quando ela morreu aos 75 anos.
em 1971 os restos mortais dela e de seu marido foram repatriados e
transferido para o Brasil. foi sepultado na Catedral
de São Pedro de Alcântara, em Petrópolis.
