A village in the style of the smallest ones of Central America during the colony, but were sufficiently populated to have their own cabildo (town hall) and church.

Around the central area, which serves as a primitive plaza, are the important structures, the church, the cabildo (kind of town hall), and houses of some inhabitants. These houses are made with walls of adobe plastered with white quicklime and covered with roofs of red tiles. They have a clear distinction that separates those of the elite, the spaniards and criollos, and the indios and ladinos which live in the jacales (huts) made of straw and wood strewn around the village

Estas casas son hechas con paredes de adobe repelladas con cal blanco y cubiertas de tejas rojas. Tienen una distinción clara que separa los de la élite, los españoles y criollos, y los indios y ladinos que viven en las casas de paja y madera alrededor del pueblo.


Those who live in the small center, those of the small elite which lived even in such small villages, would be the ones who had the power in the village, the ones who governed. These were, essentially, the spaniards and criollos (hispanics born in the country). In these solid houses the alcalde (mayor), cura (curate) and his helper, and the owners of the neighboring haciendas (estates).

Those who live in the jacales around the center were poorer, subject to the governmental and judicial power of the alcalde and to the spiritual power of the curate. These were in the vast majority: indigenous people and mixed people, called indios and ladinos. They are the working hands that truly kept the villages standing: repairing and building structures and roads, working the land as farmers, and working as the artisans of almost every tool necessary for all work and life.
