The RMS Mary Ann was launched on 3 February 1908 at the New Atlantic Navy & Defence shipyard and entered service on 2 July 1908. She was used on the Southampton-New York and Southampton-Halifax routes and was the most popular ship of the North British Steam Navigation Company at the time, which can be explained by the affordable prices for emigrants and the high luxury of 1st class. In 1914 she was refitted for the 1st World War. When the Mary Ann was supposed to bring supplies from Liverpool to France in 1917, she was torpedoed. The rudder and both propellers were destroyed in the attack. A nearby British convoy rushed to help and an Escort destroyer was able to push the submarine so that the Mary Ann was spared further damage. She could be towed back to Liverpool and repaired. In 1919 the ship was converted to oil firing, the engines and the 3rd class were modernised and she was again used in passenger service. In 1925, the reciprocating engines were completely replaced by turbines, which increased the cruising speed by 2 knots. In early 1930, the company was forced to sell the Mary Ann due to the Great Depression of 1929. Under her new owner, she continued to be used as a passenger steamer until she was finally scrapped in 1938.
