This is a 1:1 reconstruction of Rough Castle, a roman fort in today's Scotland which was part of the Antonine Wall.
I completed this project together with my good friend Hengabone.

The fort was built about 143 AD, covered an area of 4000 square meters and was the second smallest fort on the whole wall. Within the fort there was a Principia (Headquarters), a Horreum (granary) and a Praetorium (commander's house), all built of stone. There were also several barracks and outbuildings.
On the eastern side of the fort there was an Annexe called area in which there was a bath house built of stone and a variety of workshops and other buildings.
Altogether, 480 men of the Cohors VI Nerviorum were stationed in the fort.

The entire complex was fortified with turf ramparts and several ditches. The Antonine Wall itself was located directly on the north of the fort and was a turf fortification as well. The wall was further protected to the north by a ditch.

hi.
I only subscribed to the site so I could leave you a congratulatory comment on your reconstruction of Rough Castle - it's fantastic. I came across it after looking online for 'Ruff Farm / House', a long forgotten building just a few hundred yards away, now gone.
My wife and I are local to the fort and were walking all over it yesterday, which is encouraged as the site, along with the ramparts, is so large.
My only query is why you have left the eastern annex 'open' at the southern point where the wall should meet the western enclosure containing the Principia etc? All other plans, including the plan onsite, have both areas fully enclosed, with a single defensive access gate on each wall to the north, east etc of the complex.
My daughter is a Minecraft fan and has educated me somewhat on the work involved in your marvellous creation.
Just blown away.

Apologies for the late answer, I hope you still will see it.

Thank you for your kind words, I very much appreciate them especially since you are a local to the area and are familiar with the fortlet.
My decision to not enclose the annexe had to do with the lack of sources I encounterd regarding details. I did decide to recreate Rough Castle because it is kinda obscure to most people (like the whole Antonine Wall to be honest) but had the advantage of having a decent amount of quality sources about it.
Though after starting the project I realized that many detailed descriptions and drawn layouts were decades and even centuries old and it is difficult to find most of them online anyway. The plan on site which you mentioned is a good example because I could only manage to get my hand on low resolution images of it.
Since most if not all text sources lack detailed description of the southern fortifications around the area where annexe and main fort meet I had to rely on maps and decided to go for this one: Link
I took other liberties as well, for example the agricultural buildings at the road leading south are not based on much else than the speculation that some archaeological finds there mean the usage of that area as an agricultural area either by the stationed soldiers themselves or even as part of a small vicus.

Thanks again for your nice comment.

Hello again
The official (modern) interpretation of the site's layout - the one used to direct visitors at the site - is attached, showing the annex physically attached.

You are correct re sources; Scotland does tend to underplay its resources, both natural and built, so I understand your frustration. Regardless, it's always appreciated when others take such an interest in my local area.
Many thanks

Really nice, what's with the double line of holes along the one side of the wall?

Thank you!
The holes between the wall and the ditch are cippi (in contrast to the lilia more to the edge of the map which are mantraps). They are obstacles to make it harder to approach the wall. They are somewhat obscure and there isn't too much solid proof of them even existing like that but I thought it would be a nice idea to add them along the wall.
/edit: Forgot to say the most important thing: cippi were no mere holes or pits but I built them like that because I couldnt get them right otherwise.

Googling it found this:
-------------------------------
Noun[edit]
cippus m (genitive cippī); second declension

1. stake, post
2. gravestone, tombstone
3. landmark, boundary marker
4. (military, in the plural) bulwark of sharpened stakes
-------------------------------------

I'm assuming you are referring to #4. That being the case, did you try fence posts? Put in a checker pattern with different wood types and then filling 70% of the holes with nether posts might be the best you could do. But you can't get the angle on them that I assume you'd want so it still wouldn't look perfect...
