Welcome everyone; this is probably going to be my last project for a while as my week vacation ends. Still these were great days, managed to get some rest and to finish these projects to show to you guys. Thank you all very much as always and can’t wait to see you on my future builds.

This time I decided to bring you another locomotive that speaks personally to me, these meter gauge beauties, the série E200. A series I know very well as many of the engines rusted on my town’s turntable tracks. Mostly used, and the exclusive motive power, on the Corgo branch, they did the steep climb to Vila Real with ease. I sure was fun to make them, an opportunity to see them back to their glory, as we wait for E214 to steam again. Hope you like it!

This project features the CP E200 series, with full cab and interior details, buit to 3:1 scale.

HISTORY

Built in 1911 by Henschel and Sohn for the Minho and Douro divisions of the State Railroad Company, this was the last meter gauge steam locomotive series to be built. Their first service was in 1949 on the Tâmega line and the last one was around 1980’s in the Corgo line. The 16 massive engines built were mallet tanks, with four cylinders of the type compound, being the rear set high pressure and the front set low pressure. Initially built for freight traffic, they soon started hauling every kind of service as their performance was pretty much unmatched. For most of their lives they serviced on the Douro steep and twisting meter gauge branches that climbed north to the Spanish border, primarily the Corgo and Sapor lines. They were also less used on the Vouga network branch. Being meter gauged, they were never fitted to burn oil, however due to the small size of the coal bunkers, it was common for wood boards to be put on the cab and extend the coal storage inside, leaving only the sides for the drivers. With this, their capacity could be almost doubled. The unusual wheel arrangement, 2-4-6-0 made them be at the absolute limit of what the turntables could fit. Tho not scrapped, most engines were sold, tho many can still be seen rusting. There two running exemplars on France and Switzerland. In 2001, E214 was restored for heritage service but after some years a malfunction put her to the side, ending the service in 2004. In 2016 the consist was restored once again but so far it is only hauled by the diesel loco form the 60’s on the Vouga line.
