Its sole purpose was the study of the memories of different individuals living in the area during and after the Derry Massacre of 1960. One of the test subjects was a popular novelist, William Afton, who was born with the name William "Bill" Denbrough. He wrote a book on his experiences with supernatural creatures from June to September of the same year of the massacre. Shortly after being admitted to a mental hospital, he hired another novelist, Stephen King, to publish his book. It was released in 1985, and was half-based on true, real events.
