U-2333
On 27.09.1944 U-2333 a submarine of the type XXIII was laid on the Germaniawerft in Kiel for the German Kriegsmarine on Kiel. On 18.12.1944 it was put into service under the command of Oberleutnant z.S. Heinz Baum. It belonged to the 5th U-Flottille as training boat. Finally it was sunk at the behest of Operation Regenbogen on 05.05.1945 in the Geltinger Bay.
Type XXIII submarine
Type XXIII was a small coastal submarine with a length of about 34.7 meters and a displacement of 234 tons (above water) and 258 tons (submerged). Externally it resembled the much bigger boats of the type XXI. It carries legaly two torpedoes of the type G7e TIIIa FAT 2. It was driven by a six-cylinder in-line engine with 476 hp, an electric motor with 580 hp and a slow-speed electric motor with 35 hp, thus it reached speeds of up to 12.5 knots (submerged) and was thus underwater faster than above water. The last sinking by a German submarine in the WWII can be attributed to a submarine of this type. U2336 sunk on 7 May 1945 two freighters from the convoy train EN 491.
