U.S.S. Monitor and C.S.S. Virginia

Hey Guys! Here's another set of two Civil War Ironclads which were built after the overhaul of the U.S.S. Cairo build.

U.S.S. Monitor: U.S.S. Monitor was built and launched in 1862 by the Union for use in the Union Navy. She was lost on December 31st 1862 in a storm. While her wreck still lies at the sea floor, her gun turret was recovered and was brought up to the surface and preserved.

C.S.S. Virginia: C.S.S. Virginia was built in 1862 however her hull and lower structure were built in 1855. Her hull came from a scuttled Union Vessel named U.S.S. Merrimack which had burned in 1861. In May 1862 with Union Troops closing in on Virginia's location, it was decided to destroy Virginia to prevent her from falling into Union hands. Her cannon and other supplies were removed and she was set ablaze. Her powder magazine ignited in a great explosion and Virginia sank. Much like with Monitor, her turret was also recovered.

Battle of Hampton Road: In March 1862, C.S.S. Virginia attacked and successfully sank two Union wood ships, the U.S.S. Congress and U.S.S. Cumberland. She had planned to attack a third ship, U.S.S. Minnesota however she was intercepted by U.S.S. Monitor. The two ironclads battled for three hours, doing no significant damage to either one of them (Due to the fact Ironclads were more designed to sink wooden ships than other ironclads). This battle marked the first time in American History that two iron ships battled.
