The Montana-Class was the last class of battleships authorized for construction by the US Navy. The Montana's were authorized as a paired class alongside the Iowa's as the counter to the recently constructed Japanese Yamato-Class super battleships. Compared to the Iowa's, the Montana's were larger, longer, more heavily armed & armored, but slower, in fact the Montana's 12 16" gun broadside would've been the largest & most powerful broadside ever seen on a battleship, weighing roughly 4000lb more than the Yamato's 9 18" gun broadside. The Montana's were ordered to be constructed in 1942, but between the destruction of the Pacific battleship fleet, the fact the Iowa's & Essex's were being constructed in the shipyards the Montana's were intended to be built in, & the overall perceived diminished value of battleships by mid-1942, the Montana-Class was finally cancelled in July of 1943.
