Named after a WWII United States Naval Destroyer, The USS Gentry is the 9th vessel of its class to enter into Starfleet service. Like its predecessor, it would serve as a border patrol/destroyer during the turbulent early years of the 25th century.

The Valiant class was developed in response to a desperate need by the Federation to rebuild after the heavy losses they suffered during the Dominion War. Generally not discussed, Starfleet lost hundreds of ships and hundred of thousands of experienced personnel during the war. It would take decades for Starfleet to rebound from those losses.

Based exclusively on the concept of the Defiant class, Starfleet wanted to fix the glaring problems with the Defiant's design and create a combat vessel that could defend its borders and territory. The ship would have to be highly self reliant, have a crew of less than 100. It would take full advantage of the most advanced ship systems available at the time, including those that the USS Voyager returned with. Unlike the Defiant class limited range and mission duration capabilities, the Valiant would be designed to be able to run for three years without resupply. She would boast the most advanced sensor array under her heavily armored hull that could detect vessels as far as 26 light years away. She would also have the most advanced and energy efficient replicator systems onboard, including a class 6 industrial replicator. This allowed the vessel to conduct major repairs on itself and render aid to vessels in destress. Starfleet would also address the crews needs aboard the vessel. The ship contains 4 Holosuites, expanded crew quarters, and other amenities.

The class would become extremely successful and would quickly find a prominent spot in the fleet. In all more than 2000 vessels were built, and they would serve the Federation well into the 26th century.
