The Winter Palace was designed by italian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli for Impress Elizabeth of Russia. Built in Elizabethan baroque style, it stands in front of the river Neva. Once a great symbol of the Czar's power, the palace was stormed by Bolshevik sympathizers in 1917 during the Revolution. Since then, it has been mostly known as site of the Hermitage Museum.
