"The world used to be a very different place. Families, warring over the right to tax scraps of land, warring over who is to rule all other families, and warring over which God they’re all going to follow. This is Northern Europe in the seventh century. It’s an incredibly fascinating century as far as what it says about the human condition. It’s a century where the desire for unrestrained ambition, power, submission, cruelty and classism was challenged by those who saw a need for humility and manners among Kings. It was a century where the fortunes of many were eclipsed by those of the few as the slow steam-roll of conquest and progress rolled on. This strange era between the Late Antiquity and the Late Medieval period is so fascinating because political fortunes were so transient. The fast-paced competitive, oath-bonded culture of then reminds us a little of today. No one seemed certain of anything, and plans (not to mention buildings) were always made for the short term. States didn’t really exist and if they did, they always fell apart on the death of their King. The only relief from transient fortune and infrastructure seemed to be organized religion, and many an experiment was done to take advantage of it. Times were changing, people were growing more refined, borders were solidifying, stone was being chiseled, deeds were being written down. If ambitious men and women wanted to make a place for themselves in the brave new medieval world, they had to change with the times.."

The Year is 793 A.D. The year when the Viking Age began. Vikings from Denmark had just raided their first of many targets in England: the Monastery of Lindisfarne in Northumbria. A new age of violence and competition was dawning in Northern Europe. Europe's kingdoms would fend off increasing viking raids and conquest, but also grow desperate and fight amongst themselves. Some of the vikings, given time, would settle down to farm and trade in new lands.
The idea of this server is simple. We provide a 4k x 4k map of Northern Europe, and players are free to create their own factions in it, as long as their factions have historical names and locations, or join the existing one. Players within each factions will contribute to their faction by building towns in a historical style, or fight with other faction over land rights. We use a plugin called SavageFactions. Factions are able to claim more land as their player-count or aggressiveness grows!
There are six types of factions in our server: English, Welsh, Scandinavian, Irish, Scottish and French. All factions are expected to fall into one of these groups and start in the right region of our Northern Europe map. Players within the factions are also expected to have historically accurate nicknames set for themselves.
