Welcome to When the Shidhe Hits the Fan (working title), or Shidhe for short; an RP server taking place in an original universe inspired by the works of Kim Harrison and Jim Butcher and the Shadowrun universe. We hope to be noted for our devoted staff, serious (if humor-sprinkled) RP, and an interesting and engaging world; but we can't get this done without you! Right now, all we have is lore of the server and some good ideas on how it ought to be. We need a variety of people to pitch in if we're going to bring this into reality!

LORE
The year is 2024, and the world is still reeling from the Revelation.

In 2016, the Shidhe hit the fan. Millions of creatures from the "Other Place" (Call it the Spirit World, Nether, Hell, Asgard, whatever) were exiled from their home, and the gates between were shut.

Naturally, things got pretty chaotic. Everything from the Seattle to Houston is veiled in mystery and inhabited by horrors, and we've only recently gotten into contact with other nations.

This server focuses on the Chicago Neutral Territory, a sort of nation unto itself.

When the Winter Fae appeared in Minnesota, they immediately began invading the land around them, crushing us like maggots underfoot.

We only survived the onslaught thanks to the aid of both the Summer Fae and the various hidden supernatural groups on the East Coast and in the Midwest. As soon as we had room to breathe, we set about getting a treaty put down. And what a treaty it is........

Click to reveal
In the interest of the preservation of life, freedom, and societal structure, we sign into law a treaty meant to provide equal justice and a safe haven for all within the city of Chicago and the surrounding area. The treaty is as follows:

-All beings, groups, religions, or other creeds are allowed within the Chicago Neutral Territory (henceforth known as "the CNT"), so long as they abide by the laws outlined with this treaty.

-Any beings belonging to one of the signatory nations (henceforth known as "relevant territories" that dwells within another territory is to be allowed safe passage to the CNT. This includes beings trapped within Vilnfol and Saerinfol during the Revelation.

-All relevant territories must contribute to the effort of combatting the Blight to the West, for the good of all.

-The only laws to be enforced are the laws set forth within this treaty; the sovereignty of any of the relevant territories are to be disregarded except within their embassies.

-All territories are expected to defend and enforce the law within the CNT.

-The currency used within the CNT (CNT Credits) is to be universally accepted as a legitimate currency within the relevant territories, and vice-versa.

-In the event of war between two or more of the relevant territories, the CNT must be considered a neutral refugee center, where no military forces from either side can enter. Entry 2 of this treaty still applies.

-The profits made by taxation will not go to any of the relevant territories; it will be deposited in the treasury of the Chicago Neutral Territory Governing Body (CNTGB).

-The CNTGB is to be considered the sovereign leader of the CNT. So long as they abide by this treaty, their decisions are to be obeyed and respected.

Laws of the Chicago Neutral Territory

(WIP, suggest laws at your leisure)

-All Vampires must carry a card denoting their status as Vampires, and must have a contract signed by both parties before any feeding is carried out.

-Vampires may not feed upon the underage, mentally ill/disabled, the inebriated, or anyone who is legally unable to consent.
-The use of addictive narcotics (Marijuana, cigarettes, and "over-the-counter"/prescription medicines are exempt) is illegal. The selling of addictive narcotics is illegal.

-Killing in self-defense is legal.

-If their partner dies due to improper medical care or overfeeding, a Vampire must pay a minimum 10,000 Credits or equivalent currency to said partner's next of kin or equivalent person. The exact fine will be decided in court by the judge.

-All people of any magical talent must register with the CNTSB Department of Magic. It is recommended that you go into the nearest CNTSB building for a free MAG-Test (Magical Aptitude General Test).

THE RACES
Every society has it's minorities, clashing cultures, and racial tensions. But the thing about the CNT is that it's magnified tenfold, thanks to the huge physical and societal gaps between humanity and it's neighbors.
Humans
Click to reveal
Still the most common race after all this time (though not nearly as much so as before the Revelation), humans come in a variety of flavors; they can range from mighty sorcerers to meek accountants, and everything in between.

Vanillas

The given nickname for normal humans (as opposed to the more offensive "cookie"), Vanillas have little to no connection with supernatural power. However, this does not mean they can't use it in the right circumstances, as vanillas have wielded magical forces in the past. Racial tensions between vanillas and nonhumans are usually very high (in some cases they even shun their magically gifted brethren), but as with wielding supernatural power, exceptions to the rule exist.

Magi

Humans who have the ability to control magical forces. Generally a lot less twitchy around nonhumans, given that they had more or less been in the same boat for the last millenium or so. The terminology for magi is still debated to this day, but the most widely accepted terms are:

Wizard A human who is able to work magic through the use of ritual, magical foci, and mental/emotional discipline.

Witch A human who is able to work magic through the use of alchemy, potions, and more nature-oriented ritual.

Sorcerer A human who is able to work Evocationary magic (usually of a destructive nature), but is usually unable to work more complex spells employed by wizards.

Talent A human who is able to work minor acts of magic, but cannot work larger or more complex acts due to a lack of willpower, skill, or natural affinity.

Warlock A magi who uses their powers to commit crimes.

Note, this is not a strict system; some Wizards are also Witches, and some Sorcerers are Wizards. Talents can sometimes be Witches due to the low amount of magical power needed in most rituals. Any magi can be a Warlock, though Talent Warlocks are usually the magical equivalent of petty criminals. It's generally accepted that whatever you're best at, that's what you get called.

Fae/Shidhe
Click to reveal
Probably the most human of nonhumans, the Fae are of particular relevance to the story of the CNT and it's denizens. Almost all Fae are magically gifted.

They are divided into three groups: Summer, Winter, and Unaligned.

SummerThe Summer Fae are some of the most amazing people you'll ever meet. Muses for the ages, they are warm, kind, and passionate; however, you should be careful not to get on their bad side, as that warm passion can quickly turn into blazing fury. Sure, they might feel bad after they kill you, but that won't stop them from doing it. Vanilla-Summer relations are fairly good, as they're one of the biggest reasons the US hasn't succumbed to it's supernatural enemies.

Winter
Winter Fae are, as expected, a lot like their namesake: cold, calm, and vicious. If Summer Fae make great orators, Winter Fae make amazing politicians. If you **** a Winter Fae off, you can expect to be neatly categorized under "destroy if convenient". Vanilla-Winter relations can be described as "We will tolerate you until you **** us off".

UnalignedUnaligned Fae are not a group, per say; they're sort of the agnostics of Fairy Politics; They haven't pledged themselves to either Summer or Winter. They come in a variety of sizes and forms, but the most common are:

Elves Elves are what make up almost the entirety of Summer and Winter: roughly human sized, they are the most human of the most human of nonhumans. Those who are part of the upper echelons of the Summer and Winter nobility, and the occasional Unaligned, speak in in an odd olde-english dialect. Almost all elves have at least slightly better hearing than humans.

Pixies Pixies are the poster-children of the classic fairy: tiny winged people. They're so small that Summer and Winter barely even pay them mind, so they've found a great market here in the CNT, doing the jobs that require delicate precision and speed to spare. Hiring pixies is actually cheaper than using machines most of the time. Little known knowledge: They also make FANTASTIC informants and spies, if you can get one to work for you.

Gnomes/Gnomms Gnomes are an interesting race. Short (5-3 feet tall) and stout, they have very little in the way of magical ability, if any at all. They have very nimble hands and intelligent minds, and make great engineers. The majority of technology-focused appliances are gnome-designed.

Vampires
Click to reveal
Vampires are beings that must feed off of the energy of other beings to survive. Vamps come in many different flavors, but they all need life-energy to sustain themselves, whatever form that may take. If they don’t use their supernatural powers, they can survive for anywhere from a month to a few years, depending on how full the tank is, but they have to feed eventually.

Succubi/Incubi

Succubi (female) and Incubi (male) are Vampires who feed off people's life-energy directly, usually in the context of emotions ranging from rage, to fear, to lust. The most common varieties of Suc/Incubi (called Cubi as a unisex term) are:

Erotiphages Vamps who feed on lust and intimacy. Generic Twilight seducer twats. Many were quite promiscuous pre-revelation.

Phobophages Vamps who feed off fear and terror. Hard to feed legally, but there are institutions to get it done.

Furophages Vamps who feed off anger and rage. Usually impossible to sustain legally, but some of them manage.

Tristiphages They feed of any form of despair, and can consume human tears as if they were food. Ironically, a lot of them were psychologists pre-Revelation, and some still are.

Homo Lamia

Your classic Vamps, they feed off blood to survive. Fresh blood is best, but they can stomach bloodbank stuff. Repelled by symbols of faith. (Anything you believe in will do).

Homo Lamia Mortuus Homo Lamia are reclassified as this post-morterm. They become far stronger, but lose the ability to walk under direct sunlight. Once you die as one of these, you're dead.

Scions

When a Homo Lamia Mortuus lets a living Lamia, Suc/In-cubus, or non-vamp feed upon it’s blood, that being is given a power-boost in the exponential range, at the cost of a drain on it’s free will. Sometimes these “Scions” become so malleable and servile that they are little more than a flesh-puppet their masters can control.

Weres
Click to reveal
The classics. The real deal. They can morph at any time during the night, but they’re more powerful on the Full Moon. Silver can paralyze them, but you need to kill em the old fashioned way. There are more kinds of Weres than trees in the inner city, but they tend to focus on the predatory mammals; big cats, wolves, foxes.

FACTIONS

Any large stretch of heavily populated land is bound to have it's own little groups, and Chicago is no exception. But, much like with the races, the Supernatural element tends to polarize matters.
Gangs
The Alphas
Click to reveal
A group of criminal Weres, mostly werewolves with a few werefoxes and werecats sprinkled in. They have no qualms with killing innocents or bystanders, and often go on Full-Moon killing sprees.

Vermillion's Army
Click to reveal
A Vampiric crime family, they are headed up by a Vampire known only Isaias. No one is sure if he’s dead or not, or even exactly what kind of vampire he is.

The Baladacci Family
Click to reveal
After the Revelation, the majority of Mafia families were taken out by supernatural competition. The Baladaccis adapted, taking on magi and other Abs to bolster their strength. They’re known for being absolutely ruthless; after all, you have to be when you’re the only guy in the room without magical powers. They run the conventional drug trade.

Governments
CNTGB (Chicago Neutral Territory Governing Body)
Click to reveal
The politically neutral government of the CNT, the GB is plagued by internal power struggles between vanillas, fae, and various political groups.

CNTSB (Chicago Neutral Territory Security Bureau) (Subsidiary of the CNTGB)
Click to reveal
Essentially the CNT’s Police, the SB is overworked, understaffed, and corrupt. It’s pretty rare for them to show major force outside of the richer neighborhoods, but they’re doing what they can. In recent years there's been a push for a more diverse staffing, and it's starting to pick up speed.

The Summer Court/Saerinfol
Click to reveal
The Summer Court of the Fae is the nation which all Summer Fae belong to, unless they renounce their nation and join another/become unaligned. They’re one of the largest reason Winter didn’t take out humanity. In a perpetual war with Winter.

The Winter Court/Vilnfol
Click to reveal
Ditto on the renunciation thing, except you can expect to leave their nation in a body-bag. They forcibly invaded most of the Northern Midwest, but were repelled from Chicago by a combination of Summer Fae, human magi, a variety of Abs, and vanilla soldiers. Currently expanding into Canada.

Rebels/Terrorists
The People's Republic of Chicago (PRC)
Click to reveal
A group of men, fae, vampires, and really anyone that despises CNTGB rule. Many members have powers or abilities of some sort, and they are more widespread than many think, with informants in almost every group in the CNT. Obviously, they're on bad terms with the SHS.

The Society for Human Superiority (SHS)
[spoilers]Quite obvious by the name, they want a world with no fae, vampires, or magic of any kind, or at least to rule over it. They follow this wish by almost any means. Walking alone in their territory most likely leads to a painful death for any magical entities. There have been multiple bomb threats in the past around major Abnormal population clusters within the CNT.[/spoilers]

Praestantiores
Click to reveal
A group of magi that want to rule over both normal humans and other abs, considering it their birthright as advanced humans. They don’t necessarily despise humans, and wish to rule over the “Vanillas” rather than slaughter them. They’re rarely seen, and it is quite difficult to become a member of this group, as they are quite paranoid. The vast majority of their ranks are warlocks. They hate Vamps, and will often kill them on sight.

Others
The Ordo Arcana
Click to reveal
A conglomeration of most of the Pre-Revelation magi groups, the Ordo is the closest thing there is to a Mage’s Guild. The CNTSB's Department of Magic often goes to them for help.

Troika Independent Law Enforcement (TILE)
Click to reveal
Known on the street as “Troika”, or “TILE” (pronounced how it’s read), they are known equally for their amazing detective work and brutality. A strictly for-profit private investigation firm, they’re willing to do anything to get their man, so long as the pay is right. They’re equally feared and respected by the criminals they hunt. Not tied down by any laws whatsoever, the CNTSB rarely goes after them due to the positive effect they've made on the crime rate, though would be very willing to. Joining Troika is very difficult, and many members have military backgrounds.

TERMINOLOGY
Ab/Abnorm/Abnormal: The slang term for magical entities.
Vanilla :The slang term for non-magical humans.
Cookie: Racial slur for vanillas. Used by abnormals.
Demons: Racial slur for abnormals. Why drop the classics?
RULES
No powergaming, metagaming, or godmoding.
ERP is not banned. However, I suggest that you make sure it's in private (perhaps in PM form). After all, no one wants to see an Elf giving a vanilla a BJ in the middle of the street. Except me....
Obeying laws is not essential, but you can face IRP consequences.
No KoS. (Killing another player without warning. All kills must have RP leading up to)
Try to use proper grammar.
Have a proper skin that fits vaguely within the lore. There are no superheroes, there are no robots.
Respect all staff and players.
When asked if you understand the rules, say "Sure as ****, right as rain."
No OOC sexism, racism, or homophobia
Be mature. No spamming, trolling, “or “l33t” speak.
Read ALL the lore, as it will help you learn more about the world of the CNT.
Staff members have the final say in arguments, but we’ll try to consider the for/against arguments you pose.
Use the OOC chat for OOC, and the RP chat for RP. OOC in the RP chat should be in ((brackets))
