Despite only meeting each other twice, Beatrice Portinari was a woman Dante Alighieri fell in love with. She was the subject of two of Dante's most famous works: Vita Nuova and the Divine Comedy. In the Divine Comedy, she takes over as Dante's guide, due to Virgil being a pagan unable to enter Heaven. In addition, she represents beatific vision, theology, faith, grace, contemplation and divine revelation.
