However, merchants who had wealth and influence often formed a de-facto elite class of their own. This particular member of the elite sports a topknot, a standard hairstyle of men of the time, secured by a turban and a hairnet. He is also wearing a piece of silk and embroidered pre-manchu influence clothing, possibly a Zhishen 直身, tightened at the waist with a cord.
