Born and raised in poverty, his entire family died of the Black Plague. He now anonymously roams the streets, discreetly snatching people's wallets when he can. He's living in the sewers as a popular strategy to avoid 'bad air' contaminated with the Black Plague. He learned to be a professional pickpocket -for his life-, due to the fact that he lived in the Inquisition age. New ways of torture were being sought in this time, and they were becoming more excruciating and deadly.
He used to be part of a thieves' guild, where he reaped many more rewards than burgling solo, but his allies were caught by a noble. He attended their torture to respect their sacrifices, but he saw things happen to his comrades that were worse than the symptoms that his family experienced. He was scarred. He was an innocent man caught in a bad era. A good man with bad beginnings. A man forced against his morals just to survive. He was a Hooded Thief.
TL;DR: His family died, he's seen some messed up stuff, and he steals things.
