John II, or Ioannis (Ἱωάννης) Komnenos (Κομνηνός) was a Byzantine and Eastern Roman emperor in the late 11th through early 12th centuries. He is the son of the illustrious Alexios I Komnenos and does not fail in fulfilling his father's legacy. His reign was marked by his ambitious campaigns against the Selquk Turkish Pechenegs, Hungarians, and Serbs. He recaptured much of the territory lost in Anatolia in the Battle of Manzikert to the territories of Kilikia and Tarsos. He also exiled Venetian merchants and aimed campaigns towards Syrian territory. He is ultimately remembered as a prudent and brilliant military commander and one of the greatest Byzantine Emperors.
