Brief Summary

Katniss is a 16-year-old living with her mom and young sister in a poor district of panem, the remains of what was once the United States. A long time ago, the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As a part of a surrender decree, each year, the districts were forced to send one courageous boy and girl to represent their district in the Hunger Games, a televised event where the terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change, but one thing is constant: Kill or be killed. When Katniss' sister Prim is chosen at the Reaping Day, Katniss steps up to take her place and save her from the brutal blood-bath that is the Hunger Games
