The Dwemer, (also known as Dwarves or Deep Elves) were a race of elves who inhabited Tamriel during the Merethic Era and partially the First Era. They are considered the most technologically advanced race, and preferred wisdom and logic over worship of the Aedra and Daedra. The Dwemer built large underground cities, and one notable project built by them was the Numidium (also known as the Anumidium). These underground cities stretched for miles underground, the ones in Morrowind even hit lava. They dug up ores and crafted them into impressive weapons and armor, or even pipes and machines around their cities. These elves were very happy with living underground, and it is assumed they rarely went to the surface. They lived peacefully with the Chimer, until 1E 700. This was the time of the Battle of Red Mountain. The Dwemer, led by Dumac went to battle with the Chimer, led by Indoril Nerevar, over Kagrenac's Tools and the Heart of Lorkhan. Kagrenac wanted to ascend the whole race of the Dwemer into immortality by using the Heart of Lorkhan, and it is unknown whether it worked, because this is speculated to be the cause of the whole race's disappearance. There is one remaining Dwarf though, Yagrum Bagarn, and he can be found in the Corprusarium in Tel Fyr.

Lord Kagrenac himself was the Chief Tonal Architect in the First Council. He was considered the one of the greatest Dwemer of his time, and was extremely smart. He was of course, the one who created Kagrenac's tools. They are Keening, Sunder and Wraithguard. He created these tools to harness the power of the Heart of Lorkhan, the main power source of the Anumidium, another project of his. His vision was to use this godly artifact to ascend his whole race into immortality. But alas, this may have caused their downfall. During the Battle of Red Mountain in 1E 700, the Dwemer disappeared, most likely because of Kagrenac's plan. He also forged the ring Moon-And-Star, a ring only Nerevar/the Nerevarine could wear, to prove their identity. Anyone else who attempted to wear it would die instantly. Lord Kagrenac was one of the most amazing Dwarves ever, but perhaps, also the worst.
