Well it's pretty simple. What I do is let's say I want a blue shirt on my skin ill color the whole thing solid blue but after all you need to do is find a lighter or darker shade of blue and put them In certain areas like this :

... The dot means a lighter or darker shade of blue and the line means a solid color so it would have shading on the top and bottom. You could try and play around with that.
