Adopted early in life by Japanese parents, but keeping his birth name, Vance grew to admire the samurai that his foster father apparently was a descendent of. He became friends with two children in the neighborhood, Max and Kathrine, due to his foster family's friendship with their father, a police officer and former marine. Under the influence of both a police officer and an apparent descendent of samurai, Vance gained knowledge of self defense and honor. After one day discovering Max and Kathrine tied up with their parents dead, Vance felt determined to protect citizens and those he cared for. After hearing from Kathrine that she and Max intended on finding out who killed her parents, Vance felt it was his duty to help them and avenge her father who he greatly respected. He gained permission to live alone with Max and Kathrine after convincing his foster parents that it was something he had to do. Unbeknownst to them, Vance, Max, and Kathrine were using their solitude and freedom to hunt down criminals.
Even though Max was the leader of the group, the trio discussed their opinions and decided upon actions through those discussions. Speaking out on behalf of an informant who assisted in taking out a mob organization, Vance helped convince Max and Kathrine to allow Allan to live, and even join the group, though he would not be trusted completely until he proved himself. As the most ready to complete the job, and the most honorable member, Vance became a pillar of ethical behavior. Combining their features and parts of Vance's name as the mascot, so to speak, the team was named Vanguard, the frontline of defense for victims and offense against criminals.
