Description / TL:DR
===================
Warped Rooters (or just rooters, if you wish) are pesky beings that as their name implies, have adapted bodies so that the warped nylium and warped roots that covers their land can grow on them to help them blend in with their surroundings. they are mostly passive but they are not stupid and if a player is foolish enough to leave a chest out in the open they will find that some items may just go ~poof~ and fighting back in retaliation is most certainly not a good idea.
Hypothetical mechanics
====================
-Spawn in groups of 3-5, but uncommonly (warped forest is stated by Mojang to be the safest biome. At least, at the moment )
- if a player leaves a chest out in the open or in an easy-to-reach place the rooters will take random items from the chest (because to them a wood pick is just as valuable as a few diamonds I guess) and then 'bury' it (meaning whatever they took is gone for good)
-Killing them will make them drop warped roots or rarely a soul fire lantern. They will also drop any stolen items (if they do not bury it first)
-They have a neutral AI (like pigmen) so trying to retaliate to retrieve items is a bit difficult (damage dealt by them is 2 hearts, but remember they spawn in a pack)
-They also have an attraction mechanic, they will start to follow the player if the player comes within 10 blocks or line of sight and will stop following once the player is 16 blocks away. to
Notes
====================
I really don't want endermen to be the only mob that spawns here (unless Mojang is keeping mobs secret from us) but I don't want it to be the mushroom island of the nether either. I feel like something like this is a good in-between, not as hostile as ghasts or piglins/hoglins but also still be a challenge to the player, making sure that the player knows that they must be geared up and prepared for the nether instead of hiding out in an abundant dangerless biome the entire time they're there.
The mobs in-game would also be a lot smaller(and stumpier lol), making them harder to spot and harder to hit. as aforementioned they are not stupid, they are scavengers who can make items from things they find or debris they unearth.
Who knows? maybe if you throw them some items they may stay away from your goods and maybe, just maybe throw you something back?
==================================
Thanks for reading!
I had a lot of fun making this and writing the lore, and I hope you enjoy it too ^-^.

Bonus lore / silly mechanic : by RazzLime 02/23/2020 4:06:08 pmFeb 23rd, 2020
Now that the core piglin mechanics have been implemented , I thought of something. Their mechanics are somewhat opposite to each other; piglins will attack if you steal from a chest while rooters will actively take items from your chest.
Because of this (while rooters would usually stay clear of piglins), you could trick them into opening a chest within a piglins range and have the piglins dispose of them for you (they would fight back but they are up against a gold sword so obvious outcome is obvious). you could do this to save resources or you can do this to watch a war break out between the two mobs.
Maybe if you load the chest full of gold swords the fight could get a lot more interesting.
