Hey, if you're planning on working on this again, I found this recently myself, and if you don't mind, I have a few ideas.

Why not make the Stone Bricks based on the tiles from Marble Zone in Sonic 1. They'll look similar to the Stone texture (which I noticed are based on the Green Hill rocks), and could hit in with how Nethack looks like the Lava Reef tiles.
And maybe the Dispensers should look like the arrow shooter from Aquatic Ruin in Sonic 2. Either the ones in the pillars throughout the Zone, or the ones used in the boss, either way.

If you're on Windows and you can't use the texture pack, you'll need to compress the folder in order for it to work.
