Between 4.1 and 4.9 million people live in theNaples metropolitan area, one of the largest metropolises on theMediterranean Sea.Naples is one of theoldest continuously-inhabited citiesin the world.Bronze AgeGreek settlements were established in the Naples area in thesecond millennium BC.[5]A larger colony o initially known as Parthenope o developed on theIsland of Megaridearound the ninth century BC, at the end of theGreek Dark Ages.The city was refounded as Neápolis in the sixth century BCand became a lynchpin ofMagna Graecia, playing a key role in the merging ofGreek cultureinto Roman society and eventually becoming a cultural centre of theRoman Republic.[10]Naples remained influential after the fall of theWestern Roman Empire, serving as the capital city of theKingdom of Naplesbetween 1282 and 1816. Thereafter, in union withSicily, it became the capital of theTwo Siciliesuntil theunification of Italyin 1861. During theNeapolitan Warof 1815, Naples strongly promoted Italian unification.
