The sea was very calm that day, the winds slow, and the tide high. Captain Wade was standing at the edge of the tide pools, scanning the ocean for rough waves. The sun was setting, the rough winds of the day settleing down to a soft, cool night breeze. "Sir?" I asked. "Yes?" he responded. "We should be getting inside. It's getting late, and there's a blue moon tonight. You know what that means." I was the captain's only daughter, so he normaly listened to me. "Aye, I know what that means. You're right; Let us be off then." He said quietly.
...
At just after midnight, I awoke to the sound of the door opening and closing. I spread the curtains and looked out the window. The blue moon was bright over the sea. Captain Wade was walking along the beach, a very dangerous thing to do on a blue moon. "No! Father!" I yelled as I threw on my sandals. I rushed out the door as fast I possibly could. It was too late. I could hear the dreaded singing of the mermaids. I shoved my fingers in my ears and ran along the beach to Captain Wade. "Father!! Come back!" I yelled at him. He just turned around, his blue sea-eyes blank, and stepped aside. The mermaid behind him was beautiful, singing her Syren's Song, but I knew it was an illusion. "Father! Don't!' I yelled, trying to get him to come back. The mermaid grabbed Wade's arm and led him to the waves. "No! FATHER!" I screamed one last time. The mermaid threw him under the waves and dragged him down to his new watery grave. "F-father.." I wispered. I sat on the beach and quickly fell asleep, vowing silently to myself to never let my children out on the Mermaid's Moon.
