So hello there everyone!

Yes, the update is real! It actually happened! You can just go to the browser now and get it without messing with snapshots! But, of course, Mojang decides there is yet more to do, so expect Minecraft 1.5.1 to be out quite soon.

1.5 is nearly upon us, and the snapshot IS out and ready! Get it at this website.
What's in it, you ask?

Based upon the Minecraft wiki, the Mojang website, and actually trying it myself, I've put together some info for those who have no clue as to what the heck will happen or those not as technically inclined to install the snapshot.

It might seem long if you're just scrolling through it, but if you take the time to read it all the way, you will not regret it. You will know all about the update, and people will ask YOU for info. Don't worry, I try to keep it interesting. (As always.)

I'm not telling the exact crafting recipes, that would make this waaaay too long. So you'll have to look those up yourself. This post is for CONCEPTUAL information. (Find the crafting recipes here.) I hope it helps!

Major Changes to general gameplay

Some things have been SERIOUSLY revamped. The rendering engine was completely rewritten, and the FPS is increased drastically. In layman's terms: lag has been reduced a ton.

Lighting is fixed and more realistic, for example, furnaces only give light off of one face.

Texture pack fixes. HD textures will work without MCPatcher, because every block, item, and data has its own texture file. But fear not--existing texture packs will be converted "automagically" to 1.5 filetype. Texture packs can also make blocks be ANIMATED!

Redstone is more analog, so the north-south glitch, for example, will be removed. And the strength of a signal now matters MUCH more than before. So, non-redstoners, keep that in mind for any simplistic machinery.

Inventory is managed better. Quoting the wiki here, because there's a bunch of info. (Don't kill me moderators, I gave them credit.) As you can see, there's a bunch of tricky little trick to do with your mouse.
"Better Inventory management
  • Double-click items to fill the stack up as much as possible
  • Drag item stacks around to divide them up over the dragged-over slots
  • Drag item stacks around with the right mouse button to place one of that stack in each dragged-over slot, if that slot is not occupied already
  • Shift double click items in a crafting area to place all items in the inventory
  • Shift double click an item stack to move all other item stacks of that kind to that part of the inventory
  • Pressing Q while the mouse is over an item in the inventory or a container to drop it"

More death messages. "Player fell off a ladder", "Player fell into a patch of cacti" "Player tried to swim in lava while trying to escape player/mob" "Player got finished off by player/mob"

A bunch of new options and language settings, including a very important one; the moving of the texture packs button from the title screen to the options menu. Also there's a new /scoreboard command that shows various deaths and/or accomplishments of players.

In creative mode you can hit stuff from 5 blocks away.

And of course, more bug fixes. Most notable of all is the removal of black spots while rendering.Read more about thos on the changelog when it updates.

The new additions to the Redstone family!
  • Redstone Comparator - If input A (the back) is stronger than input B (either side), the comparator will act as a gate. Or if you right click it, it acts as a repeater.
  • Hopper - Looks like a funnel, and that's how it works. If an item is dropped into it, it gets stored in one of its 5 slots. If it is connected to another storing block (chest, brewing stand, furnace, NOT enderchest) it will be put into it. If it is powered with a current, it will not move the items. Also, if it is UNDER a storage block, items will "leak" from it as if dropped. It seems like it would be a non-solid block, but actually isn't. You can place rails over it, and if a minecart with chest goes over it, an item will be taken out.
  • Trap Chests - Emit a redstone signal when opened. Items can be stored like normal chests. The more users use it (up to 15), the stronger the signal.
  • Chests - These have been around before, as you hopefully know, but now emit a signal that equates to how much stuff is in it.
  • Weighted Pressure Plates - The more items on them, the stronger the signal. They come in two varieties--heavy and light.
  • Dropper - Think of a dispenser that doesn't shoot. You now have a dropper. They can be placed facing ALL 6 WAYS, including up and down! This can be very useful. You can also place a dropper in front of a storage block and when powered, will place it into it.
  • Redstone block - Just like a block of diamond, gold, or iron, a redstone block is used to compress/store redstone. But it has interesting properties--it constantly emits a redstone output. Kinda cool because it acts as a power source even when pushed by a piston.
  • Nether Quartz - Mined from the nether, smelted like iron, and used in the comparator and daylight sensor. Also craftable into decorative blocks, such as PILLARS, chiseled blocks, and stairs and slabs.
  • Daylight sensor - Emits a redstone output that is the same as the level of DAYlight. Is not affected by other light sources.
  • Dispensers - Have been amped up. You can make them face up or down now too. They also can equip players with armor from up to 1 block away. They can use bone meal on plants and saplings. A more evil side--they can place and activate TNT and create fire if a flint and steel is in it. Flint and steel will be depleted normally from inside of it.

New Rails & carts!

  • Detector Rail - Improved so if it powers a comparator hooked up to it, it makes an output that equates to the amount of items in that particular cart
  • Activator Rail - With redstone power, you can activate Minecarts with TNT.
  • Minecart with TNT - Put TNT on a minecart, and when activated, will blow up immediately when it runs out of rails, so basically ignores TNT's regular timing effect. Interestingly, the faster it is going, the more violent the explosion.
  • Minecart with Spawner - Not sure if it will be added with the update, so...uh...not much to say, ecept that it's a minecart with a spawner in it. There's also a planned Minecart with Dispenser.
  • Minecart with Hopper - Works like a hopper, will be emptied when it passes over a hopper with a rail over it. It can pick up items that it "runs over."
  • Rails - Possibly a new rail(s). Also the possibily of minecarts being linked when powered by a minecart with furnace. Mobs now will not cross tracks unless pursuing the player. (FINALLY)

Monsters get a Makeover

  • Skeletons - Shoot from 5 blocks farther away, can shoot faster when their target is closer, and scale to your difficulty.
  • Zombies (zahmbes :3 ) - They tell their zombie friends when you're close, they get stronger (more aggressive) the more you hurt them, and if they get set on fire, they can set YOU on fire! Of course, they also scale to the difficulty.

More Random Update-y Stuff

  • Nether - Nether Quartz ore is randomly placed all over the place (supposedly to encourage exploration)
  • Abandoned Mineshaft - Items no longer spawn in chests, but in minecarts with chests.
  • Bone Meal - This really disappointed me when I read it--instead of growing plants all the way, they only grow it one stage up. :( At least they now emit green particles when used.
  • Snow!! You can take your snow cover thingy (available in creative AND in survival, via crafting snow blocks), and stack them on top of each other.

So that's all. If you read up to this point, diamond it for being cool enough to read through! If you didn't, that's OK, I'm not a hater.

As always...

That's all folks. Now back to playing that snapshot...

~ 1.5 is out. I realized a bunch of the stuff is inapplicable, or new stuff's been added. Tried to fix as much as possible, but there's still some stuff wrong.
+ Snow slabs! :D

Yeah! Another way I used them was to make technically infinite storage by making hoppers in a circle all connected to the next one, thus making every item dropped into it rotate around infinitely.

Any idea what kind of load that places on servers? If any...?
