There are certain things a server owner always must make sure of.

1. Make sure spawn is FULLY protected.
The crappiest servers are known to not have protected spawn. If you're running vanilla make sure that you have entered the correct spawn protect radius for your spawn and mark it on your server then make sure to build only within that protected radius. If you are running bukkit/spigot and have world guard, protect your spawn and places you want protected all the way up and down. World guard only protects the selected blocks, so when you selected your area do //expand 1000 up and //expand 1000 down just to be sure you selected all the blocks. Then go ahead and protect it.

2. Make sure that players can access all the commands they are supposed to and not the ones they aren't.
If you are running a bukkit/spigot server, players usually should have access to some commands. Look at the plugins you installed's permission nodes and add the permissions they need to the group on your permission plugin. Do this for every group.

3. Monitor and clean up your server.
Players tend to build their houses RIGHT NEXT TO SPAWN, this irritates me but they will never learn. If you have no player self-protection plugin and rely on players to use their common sense or if they don't know how to use that plugin, this is going to be a tough one. The houses will get griefed. That is a fact. So when they do, clean up the broken pieces and maybe lava and relocate those noobs who built their house there.
You will also find pillars of random blocks all around, break those down too.

4. Be strict.
Now I know that you want to be liked, but being passive or too soft makes players take advantage of you. "Hey i got griefed and they took my 5 stacks of diamonds, give them back", say No. "I want to build a house, quick give me supplies and fly or creative", simply say No. Most players are evil and get mad with powers, don't trust them.

5. Choose your admins wisely.
First thing: Do not trust anybody with admin who seems nice the first few days, you need to know your admins. Then make sure your admins aren't too nice or too useless. They need to be helpful towards the players but not hand them things at their word.

6. Don't close a server after a few weeks.
This is the most common mistake people make, even the pros. Do not expect a hundred million players your first day, there will be maybe 1-5 people starting at the first week then it will SLOWLY grow, you might have 20-40 regulars your first month then it will continue to grow slow.

7. If you choose a host, choose one wisely.
Most of these fancy hosts ask too much, way too much. Three rules:
  • Do not buy from one that prices by slots
  • Do not buy from one that has over 500 users
  • All you need is Good connection, Good uptime and Good price, no good looks or people that set up your plugins for you

Some of this is debatable, tell me weather you agree or disagree in the comments section down below. Thank you for reading this.
