--The Younger Brother--

-By Magictheif

Steven had awoken with a start. What made him awaken was from not far. Sweat was on his forehead.

He was thinking of her again. The wind howled against the doors, windows, and house. He turned on his side.

He tried to force his mind of the thought, but it was too late. He started thinking of the day. The day when it all happened.

Oh, it wasn't an unhappy day. The castle was shining, and Steven had pull on his horse, carrying the rope along. "Just...a bit...farther..." Steven groaned, he wasn't in very happy moods. Until he was over the tall slope, which they had been climbing.

His face twisted at the sight. It was such a confused, happy, sad, and gloomy, bright face, that it was completely confusing.

"Package, isn't it wonderful?" He asked, while looking at his horse. "Let's go see the King!" He said, his moods changing so fast, it seemed impossible. He ran down the hill, his horse following after, excited too.

While he ran, he caught many curious glances. It was a bright cheery place. Peasants bustled 'bout, and horses trotted by. Carrying knights in ((shining)) armour. The houses were everywhere. Stalls, and stands dotted the place, full of villagers selling produce. "'Ello, lad, you seem excited what's the rush?" Said an elderly man, after seeing Steven, and Package dash by. "Secret!" he said to him, racing farther ahead, gleaming at everything.

He'd never visited such a beautiful, and crowded place before. Then again, this was his first time leaving from his hometown.

Little kids were making money, by doing puppets for people passing by, and Steven dropped a silver piece in, grinning at the shocked faces from the children.  When he saw the castle, he was beyond excitement, and happiness. When a guard grunted at him, Steven said, handing him a signed letter from the king, "The King himself, invited me here, to sell items sir. I was told to wait by the gate til noon, sir. It's noon about now, may I enter?" The guard stared him up and down, as if he was filth. "Permission to enter, to this lad here!" he yelled up at the tower, after looking at the signature several times, bewildered.

"It's a real shame, the princess is out this evening. You won't be able to meet her, shame, shame." Said the guard, he grinned wickedly. Steven smiled and said, "I'll be staying the week in the castle. My brother Steve is a knight here. I'm just glad I'll be seeing him again. It's been three years now." After Steven said this, the guard paled and said, "T-The Steve? The s-silver knight? The King has him as his right hand man?" Steven nodded and said, "Shame he didn't mention me. We are brothers." He emphasized 'brothers' and when the gate opened, he walked in.

It was a casual time in the castle. Servants bustled 'round, and milkmaids looked up and smiled at him. He actually felt important. When a few guards escorted Steven into the castle before the king, his older brother winked at him. Steven was amazed at how great his brother looked. He always looked up to him at the farm, but since he left he was worried sick about him. Now he was sure Steve was fine. "Your Majesty." Steven bowed, smiling at Steve. "My dear boy, none of that! Your brother here will be marrying my daughter, you should consider us family now." Steven stood up and stuttered out,

"Yo-you m-mean the p-princess? I shall send a l-letter to father right away-" "No need, he has known of it for a month now. He wished for it to be a secret to you." The King said. "You can call me Ron. Don't call me by my formal name:

Ronald Matthias Finnigan Relwind the III of the Relwind Isles. Dreadful long. Why don't you and your brother go get time to catch up in the study? I can tell you miss each other." Steve said, "Thank you, Ron." After that, Steve got out of his chair, and grinned at him.

After Steve and Steven went to the study, Steven explained all about the farm. "Yes, I heard from letters, you were planning on a proposal to the daughter of the blacksmith, correct? Her name is Alice, right?" Steve asked, after hearing about the blacksmith. Steven noticed his face get warm. "U-uh...Yeah. Her name is Alice. I was going to propose to her after I came back." "Alice, and Alex. Such strange coincidence that we're both going marry people who have similar names. Also, how is father back there?" Steve asked, still pondering things before. "He's fine, I think he's been thinking about mum though. Always sits by the window and talks to himself. It worries me sometimes. Then I realize why he's there." After Steven said this he looked up and saw Steve his head drooped, and he was frowning.

"Let's go get dinner, and meet my fiance. Your new sister in law." Steven and him stood up, and left the study.  When they got to the table the princess sat down, next to Steve, after they greeted each other. Alex, the princess was very pretty. She had orange colored hair, and she wore a silk green dress. It was tied in a braid going over her shoulder. He didn't like the fact she looked a lot like Alice, back home. His Alice had flaming red hair, and her favorite color was green. It made him homesick.

The night flew by, and so did the days, and the week. On his last day there, his brother Steve said, "I'll have you two come up and live here, when you and Alice get married.  I guess...it's time for you to go then." After that, they embraced shortly, and Steven got on Package, after declining a new, white horse. He set off.

The children from earlier must have bought new puppets, and were planning a new show. They looked at him and said "Thank you!" He smiled at them. "Ooo! Ooo- It's the prince!" One the kids said. Steven never thought of that. Prince. It doesn't sound right.

When Steven made it home, he saw a fire burning. His heart sped up. He saw bodies everywhere, and he cried out, when he saw his father dead, on the ground. His body burning. He heard a high pitched scream and he knew exactly who it was. Alice. He ran over the dirt which was upturned, and saw a tall, black, skeleton clinking it's sword nearer to Alice, who had a cut leg. She couldn't move. Steven ran in front of the skelton of black, and brandished his new sword, made of diamond. The skeleton clinked back, apparently surprised by the weapon. "Steven...help..." He heard Alice say. He couldn't waste time fighting. Steven slashed the black gaunt skeleton and it's ribcage side shattered. He momentarily paralyzed it, and he picked Alice up. "Every...e-e-everyone....dead..." He put his sword in his hilt, and set her on the horse. He clambered on, and they sped off. "It'll be okay Alice...We'll make it back to the castle. Just hang in there..." He repeated several times, his heart broken over his father dead.

"G-get some rest..." He kissed her cheek, and held onto her as Package flew by, the sun rising. She fell asleep, easing the pain. He poured healing tonic in her mouth, and she swallowed it. When they made it over to the top of the hill leading to the town, only small commotion was in the big city. All of the people looked horrified when they saw Steven bleeding everywhere because of Alice. When the guards opened the gate without permission or entrance grant, Steven knew he made a scene.

The King, Ronald, rushed out, still in nightwear, he widened his eyes. "Get the medics! The doctors! The brewers!" He cried out.

Steve came along just as quickly. When he saw Steven and Alice he instantly said, "Where's father, where's father Steven? What happened?" After Steven made no response, Steve started shaking him. Tears came to his eyes, and he hid them.

When Alex came out, Steven saw her smile. She quickly wiped the smile off her face, and started crying. He felt like stabbing a sword right through her. She was a dirty foul liar.

The hours passed by, and Steven felt no emotion. He had no words come to his mouth. He was mute. When he finally spoke, he only muttered "They're coming....coming to kill us....take us away...." He felt like he was going crazy. Insane. Yet, he knew he was right. They were coming. To kill them all. Take them away, and kill them.

He was too late to speak, Alice wasn't coming out, and the medics looked worried. Finally they came out and said, "You should see her...before she....leaves us." Steven stumbled over to the room, and walked in. Alice was lying there, half gone, half there. She said to him, "...It's go...ing to be....ok....I...I always loved you...Steven..." After a moment, her hand went still and small movement from her stopped.

Steven stumbled out, carrying her, not listening to the protests. Steve watched him, his face was streaked in wet tears. Alex faked her comfort, and made him go back into the castle.

Steven walked through the streets carrying her, as far as he could go. After a moment, he saw a black swarm off in the distance. He should warn them. When he realized it was too late.  The children came up and said, "Is she sleeping? You should get her a blanket. Here, since you gave us money to buy those puppets, we made you some puppets!" The little boy handed him four puppets. He forced a smile, and told them, "You need to follow me, go...go get your mother and father and leave this place, otherwise, you'll die. Monsters are coming...they...they killed my ...friend" He choked out. The children ran off, believing him. He saw many people rushing from homes after that, and run off, into the forest, and out of town. The milkmaids and servants ran off screaming, and Steven walked off, into the forest. He saw the children and their parents rushing off, into the forest as well.

They might make it...good for them. Steven clutched the four puppets, and carried Alice. Her skin had gone pale. When he made it up the hill, he started to set her down. After he saw the black skeleton monsters slaughter people, and march onward, killing for no purpose.

When the skeletal monsters made it over to him and Alice, they ignored them. Steven lay down on the grass next to her cold body. He didn't need warmth. He was already dead. It felt like that in pain. It always did. Everything slowed down, and you could see and hear all things going on. This time though, Steven felt nothing, except bitter  Bitter, and cold inside.

Steven jumped to a start. He must've fallen asleep. The thunderstorm raged on outside, and he remembered he wasn't dreaming. He was thinking of the day. The day when it all happened.
