A lot of servers die out real quick. Within a week of fame, they jump from one site to another desperately selling and advertising their server. Yes, eventually servers die out, and you need a new method of advertising, but there's a way to keep players on your server, but this involves a little calling out, reaching out, and a bit of taking advice.

1. Don't spawncamp the newbies!
That's the #1 turn off of a server; not being able to even get started because there's so many power trippy players waiting for you outside suited up in diamonds. Setting a regulation to not kill new players (unless provoked) is the best way to actually ensure people will like the server; based on the fact that they actually got to try it. This only goes for PvP servers. Especially faction servers, because at certain points, you'll get killed, lose your power, and pretty much give up as you'll have to wait and hour just to claim a piece of land

2. Get an anti X-Ray plugin (unless, y'know, you allow cheats)
Everything is usually more fun if everyone can jump to riches at their speed, and not be easily outmatched by another player just because they can cheat. (unless you're the cheater). In fact, find an abundance of plug ins that fight hackers and cheaters, it keeps the server fresh.

3. Diamonds for Diamonds!
A good turn-on for someone to your server is knowing that they can get some free things by voting up your posts on whatever website. This shouldn't be too over exaggerated like "Vote us up once, we'll give you an entire diamond set!", but just tossing out 1-3 diamonds for each vote.

4. Don't make donors too powerful
Of course to get monies, giving special features to donors is a must. But there's a fine line between "you can earn 6 diamonds a day, 10 porkchops a day, and you can make chest shops at spawn" and "you get a whole diamond kit, 1 stack of instant damage potions, and all the food you need, every, day, of your lifeeeeeeee". Donors should get an edge, not god status.

5. Hire staff, from ALL OVER THE WORLD
Hiring mods (to keep watch, or kick players) from all around the world is a good idea. Give mods minor abilities, just enough to enforce the server. As of hiring from around the world, find out if players live in different countries, and after getting to know them enough, you can know your server is in safe hands while you take your naps.

This is all the advice I can give, don't criticize me because I don't have a server, I'm still working on mine, and I know plenty of successful servers that use methods like that.
