A short Article about Competitiveness and how it affects our precious Community.
Quick Overview:Competitiveness is among most of the world at the moment, and especially the past months. For example; The Euro 2012 Tournament, the London Olympic Games, the American Presidential Vote and so on. All of this competitiveness got me thinking that the Minecraft community is not too far off real world competition. So, this is what I have to say about it.
The Scenario:
Imagine you have just posted a awesome Minecraft project here on PMC. However, also picture that one of your good friends has also posted a project on PMC, except he posted it a day later. Naturally these friends, whether they show it or not will become competitive and strive to see whom will gain the most views, favourites, downloads and diamonds! However, is this bad?
There are two outcomes that come to my mind;
A) The two friends get so dedicated to beating one another they fall out.
B) They do not take the competition too seriously and just enjoy their projects.
Which one sounds the best for these friends? Answer 'B' is the obvious! Yet, most would people would probably end up being in situation 'A'. Why? Because its been programmed in many youngsters that winning is everything - even if you do not know it. The world IS a very competitive place, and as a result; many Minecrafter's take PMC as a brutal competition.
In the End:
Well this is my opinion: Competition is VITAL for progress. It's what makes Minecraft Projects better in detail and quality. It can completely turn a lazy-crafter into a decent submitter of projects. On the other hand; too much competitiveness and the PMC community can quickly become ugly. Like most things in life, competitiveness is something that is nice in moderation thus fuelling the decent quality of Minecraft projects.
So, lets not all be totally obsessed with competitiveness and take time to keep each other happy. Instead of just 'viewing' a project, comment on it! And instead of just insulting someone's project, tell them how to improve! And most of all, tell someone what kind of project to aspire to!
The correct amount of competition and aspiration can create a project that 1000's of crafter's will love and enjoy!
