Could Minecraft Server Owners make a difference?

I've been playing minecraft for three years and a few months now, a long time indeed to say the least. A solid three years running my own server. Not a big server, not a massive popular server but a small tight knit community of talented players who get along. But I have ventured to other servers to play games or visit community parties and many other servers. But there are times you connect to the wrong neighbour hood. Players being sexist, racist and making homophobic comments to purposely harm and insult people. I've come to believe not to pay attention to people online and yes if you don't like the players on a server, you can just leave which is fair enough. But why do we have to tolerate servers like this? Why don't the owners ban them? Well... some of the owners are the exact people who promote the discrimination in the servers. Isn't it time we did something?

But what could we do as server owners? Or the average Joe on the server? For me, I have set down in my server a rule which states "Sexist, Racist or Homophobic insults/remarks will not be tolerated and will result in a permanent ban which no eligibility of appeal." Sure my server has had people on it who made remarks in the past but we simple banned them if a player got distressed over it. But when the my servers council of OP's voted to bring in the new rule, the players hugely welcomed it. Mostly the female players but it was widely welcomed and I'm proud to say my server holds onto a valued rule which will make it a welcoming place.

Could other servers follow? Maybe, it would be a nice idea and together we as minecraft server owners could lead a role in rolling back the stone aged views of some players. Also another thing, bullying in other aspects. I've seen it. I'm not talking about "Hey, your house is so big, it could be your mum" stuff. General bullying, threats. Younger players who are now becoming a big thing in MC could take these threats as a serious threat to which we, as server owners or operators should be aware and try to stamp out. Or even help those who are getting bullied in real life. We might live in another nation miles away but we could take a positive role in the world. Even if a small step. Sure some of the problems above might be the small occasional thing, but what if what you say or done today, helped someone have a better tomorrow?
