Deep as the Arctic Sea
Her inky dark hair whipped in the biting wind of the Arctic. She tugged her homemade jacket closer and flipped up the hood. She shouted to her parents in her native language and looked out into the white abyss she called home. They responded from their small igloo, and she saw smoke rise from the top slowly. She turned and fixed her gloves when her eyes made out a small, gray shape in the distance. She trudged against the wind, snowflakes catching on her black eyelashes. Coming closer, the girl realized it was a small animal, a flower of red on its lower stomach. She gasped lightly and reached down to the furry animal.
o Shh, shh,o she cooed, blinking away the biting ice that hit her skin briskly. She took the animal in her arms and turned it to face her gently. It was a polar bear cub, crying softly with pain. The girl rushed to her igloo she shared with her younger sister and bandaged the young cub up, the blossom of red surrounding the large gash. The cub batted at the edge of the bandage, curious as to what it was. He cried out quietly when he accidentally hit the gash she covered up so gingerly. The girl took the cub in her arms and warmed it up using her gloves as friction. Ito s black eyes, deep and black as the Arctic Ocean, stared up at her in wonder. The girl petted its back, holding the small cub to her. What couldo ve attacked the cub? And where was ito s mother? She thought about the possibilities and glanced down at the cub. It had fallen asleep, snoring slightly as air blew out of its nose forcefully. She settled down next to the cub and fell into a deep slumber. The fire crackled on, the smoke rising out of the igloo and into the sky.
The next day, the girl awoke to the sounds of screaming. She leaped onto her feet, noticing the polar bear cub was wide-awake as well, looking wary of the path outside. The girl plucked the cub from the floor and tucked him into her jacket, where he clung faithfully. Her arms free, she rushed into the Arctic abyss of startling white. Her sister stood at the end of the one street of their whole village, face-to-face with a very angry polar bear. The girl calmly took her dagger from ito s sheath and stalked her way to her younger sister, making sure the polar bear didno t notice her small steps towards the two. Her younger sister fell to the ground as the polar bear roared, ito s huge body smelling of nastiness that came with lack of a good swim in the Arctic Ocean. The polar bear cub, nestled inside her jacket, cried at the sight of the larger polar bear and jumped from her warm embrace, loping to the bigger one. It was obviously the cubo s mother. The girlo s younger sister screamed and ran away, running in the opposite direction. The girl looked at the two polar bears, the cub playing joyfully with ito s mother. The bigger bear looked at the girl, ito s eyes as deep and black as the Arctic Sea, and huffed her way to the girl. Her inky black hair whipped in the wind as the mother bear nudged her with ito s large nose. The girl pet ito s muzzle and watched as the two polar bears ran into the abyss of white. She returned to her igloo and sat down.
The fire crackled on, the smoke rising out of the igloo and into the sky.
