Eyes Wide Shut- A Minecraft Biography
By: Eric Barber

Steve awoke to find himself buried under sand on a beach. He casually brushed off the sand and stood up, taking sight of the majestic spectacle that stood before him, a sunset setting amongst mountains. He was in a lush area filled with all sorts of trees, flowers, and animals. He was in complete awe of his sights but, there was one large issue. He had absolutely no idea where or who he was. In that moment, Steve made it his personal mission to find out just what his true origins were.

Steve began walking around the area, trying to see if anything looked familiar or if there were any clues. He didn’t find much but he had the overwhelming feeling that something was odd; he just didn’t feel natural with everything being so blocky, including him. It was almost as if he had the worst case of amnesia ever, he could effortlessly swipe aside tall grass, punch dirt away, and chop down trees with his bare fists! It was amazing Steve felt that this was not his own world, but he liked living in it. He had felt empowered, as if no one could stop him, he liked the foreign world.

The sun had finally sunk down all the way, it was now night. Even without the sun the moon was able to provide enough light for Steve to see just fine, which he was quite surprised about. Out from nearby caverns he could see spiders, zombies, and skeletons armed with bows approaching him. He knew they could not have been friendly. Steve did not fear the oncoming threat, armed with his new powers he made a great charge towards his opponents he charged straight towards the skeleton, but was astonishingly pushed back by the immense knockback of the bow. Not only that but for the first time since his awakening he felt pain. The skeleton was beginning to overpower him, his fight or flight senses began to change gear, he couldn’t even handle the skeleton there was no way he could take on the zombie and the spider. He ran into a distant cave and made a weak dirt shack he stood in there for hours until he was certain the sun had once again risen.

Steve punched his way out of the dirt wall that harbored his safety, he knew that from now on he had to become better prepared; he held the wood he had previously chopped down from the tree and instinctively knew how to create a Crafting Table, which was weird because he was suddenly understanding more of this world. He was being immersed with information. He could see visions, how to create swords, pickaxes, boats and so much more. He didn’t understand but he knew that he could not stop for night would come soon, and he wasn’t sure about what other powerful creatures roamed the night. He made his first pickaxe in almost no time at all, and began easily mining the stone in the caverns, not going too deep due to fear of the monsters. After only a few hours, Steve had mustered himself up a complete array of stone tools. Steve felt accomplished almost as if he could take on the world! No ordinary person could pull off these tasks could they? Steve had no time to ponder on this, for the sun was setting fast. He made a quick cobble construct and began lining up his defenses. It was a simple house with cobble lined along the outside, a small chest in the inside, a few torches for light, and a wooden door for easy access in and out. While this wasn’t much it put Steve’s mind at ease as he was safe from harm for another night.

The next morning Steve had realized that he had not gotten tired from not sleeping at all for the last two days. This left Steve questioning his state of being once again. Steve knew that to find his answers, he had to stay alive and work to discover the answers he was looking for. He began venturing deeper into the mines looking for rarer minerals such as iron and redstone. Luckily on this expedition he ran into a plethora of iron ore which he would then be able to smelt down and turn into armor. While mining, he ran into the occasional spider or zombie but they were no match for him with his superior weaponry. After the duel with a few monsters, he took out the freshly smelted iron from his furnace and began smithing iron armor and tools. Steve was more powerful than he had ever been in his whole existence and he could feel that he was only going to get stronger. Just then his stomach experienced excruciating pain that began spreading throughout his body, for the first time Steve had experienced true hunger. It was a pain like no other, and it drained him fast. In a last ditch effort he took a bite of the rotten flesh he had gotten from the zombie he killed. While he hated the taste, it stopped the pain but he could tell he would need food soon. He emerged from the cave and a blood-fest broke out. All wildlife in the area had been slaughtered by Steve; sheep, cows, chicken, and pigs. None were given mercy, for Steve needed their meat to survive. Steve once again spent the night in his cobble construct, barely passing by.

The following morning Steve was saddened, for he had gotten lonely. He wanted to learn of his origin, and more importantly he wanted a companion that would take part in his survival adventures. Steve then decided to make a sort of pilgrimage to find the answers to his questions; he packed up all of his supplies and began a journey to find his true origins. Steve traversed across forests, tundra’s, and many more.

During the fifth night of Steve’s trek his eye were caught by an illumination on the side of a hill. Out of curiosity Steve had approached the light. He was amazed at what he saw, a fully functioning village! He saw advanced farming techniques, stables homes, and a large population who of people seemed friendly. The village was astounding Steve readily approached the villagers to see if they could help him with his quest, he was saddened when they had little interest in his personal goals and focused more on trading with him.

Things were looking dim for Steve, he had spoken with all the villagers and none could help him, he noticed a large cobble tower that stuck out from the rest he decided to approach the tower with its unique design. He cautiously went into the door and climbed up the ladder to his surprise there was someone at the top of the tower, the man looked different from anyone he had ever seen before he had similar body structure to the rest of the villagers but definitely different in face. Steve asked if he was able to help in trying to find who he was. The man let out a gentle smile and replied with “so you’re an adventurer I see, well the secret to this adventure lays in the End” Steve was puzzled by his response. “The End..? What is that?” The Mysterious Individual replied with “Take this map, follow it all the way to the point indicated, there you shall find a stronghold the rest shall all be explained from within.” While Steve didn’t know the man he had a sense of trust, as if he had known the person before.

Steve spends the night at the village, and then once again heads off to where the map was pointing at. he stopped for nothing as he knew that his answers were soon to come. He arrived at the point and he saw a ruined underground stone brick bunker he knew he was in the right place. He looked around the area for clues he found several abandoned chests, which included golden apples, bread, and most importantly a diamond sword. The whole area spooked Steve out he wasn’t exactly sure what he was looking for and he could hear the groans of zombies from every direction. Steve further roamed the stronghold until he heard a strange noise he knew whatever it was it was right behind the iron door in front of him. He opened the door and was swarmed by tiny grey monsters they had the characteristics of fish and rats. He was taking hits from all sides due to his panic he ran up the stairs and fell through a speckled, glowing black portal.

Steve awoke on an obsidian platform in awestruck of where he was, a massive island floating in the air made up of a hard sponge-like material. Around him he could see obsidian pillars with some sort of beacon at the top. From behind him he heard a massive roar; it was powerful enough to make the entire island tremble. He slowly turned around to see a hefty Dragon larger than most buildings flying overhead. Steve instinctively knew that all would be revealed once the dragon had been slain. He had a few spare bows and a handful of arrows due to run-ins with skeletons; he knew he could take it down. He began firing at a rapid rate trying to do whatever damage he could to knock out the dragon. Any damage he managed to land on the dragon was instantly recovered due to the beacons on top of the pillar; he knew he had to take the beacons out in order to truly harm the beast. He focused all of his attention on the beacons knocking them out with relative ease, as he made his final shot on the last beacon he was interrupted by a large amount of crashing to his surprise the dragon had swooped down and was heading directly towards him! A direct hit was knocked on Steve he took out his sword, but it was too late, the dragon had flown back into the air. Steve had now believed it was he who had the advantage; he ate the golden apple in an attempt to recover all the health he lost and to gain additional protection. Steve launched arrows with a burning fury, they were greatly impacting the dragon and he could tell the dragon was getting weaker with each blow. Steve estimated that in only a few hits the dragon would be knocked out for good, suddenly the dragon changed its trajectory and began heading directly towards Steve! Steve used as many arrows as he could to try and kill it before it could kill him, it did damage but it didn’t look like it would kill the dragon. Within an inch of the dragon killing him he unleashed his diamond sword in its celestial glory and made a clean swipe on the dragons head as it was just about to crash into him.

Upon the moment of impact, beams of white light began emerging from all directions it was glorious, he had finally done it, Steve had completed his mission, all that stood in front of him was a luminescent portal. He walked up to the portal took a deep breath and walked right into the shroud of mystery.

Steve found himself floating in what appeared to be a void space; he was then joined by the Sun and the Moon. They were communicating amongst each other then the pair faced him. “Greetings Steve, your memories were lost, but we are here to bring them back. You are a twenty-four year old male living in the city of Chicago, college did not work out how you had planned it, and your parents always gave you neglect, you began to lose the will to live. One day when you were on a stroll around your neighborhood block a car brutally crashed into you. You should have died but we decided to intervene because we had hope in you, but of course we would not just save you, you had to prove to us that you were able to work on your inner self, and accomplish some of the most difficult tasks, when you defeated the dragon that was the final barrier that kept you from life, now that it’s done, you shall regain your old life.

Steve woke up in a hospital bed startled, things felt normal once again nothing was blocky anymore, everything seemed at ease. The doctor asked “Are you feeling alright?” Steve could only reply with “It’s good to be back”

"Eyes Wide Shut" is a Kubrick movie. You may want to name your story something else.

Haha, I just Googled the movie and it came out the year I was born. :P
I haven't personally seen the movie myself, but from a quick wiki read-up. It has nothing to do with gaming or Minecraft. It's described as an "erotic thriller" which this story certainly is not. The only two things mine and the movie have in common are the name. But thanks for letting me know sir :)

I'm no sir :D

Yeah, I figured this is unintentional, but for a very brief moment I wondered: "holy crap,  did someone actually do that? Did someone write a Minecraft version of Eyes Wide Shut?" Sadly, the story didn't feature any pornographic Illuminati rituals. Oh well, maybe next time.
