Introduction
Hello everybody. I'm Seghas, more commonly referred to as Seg. Today I'm going to be talking about flame wars. Flame wars are a serious internet problem in today's tech-savvy world, and they can easily be prevented with a bit of work and some intelligence.

What is a flame war?
A flame war is an internet fight on forum sites and sites like Facebook and Twitter. In other words, any social media website.
Flame wars usually involve arguing using extreme amounts of foul language and eventually turn a normal website into a disastrous mess.

Detecting a Flame War
You can usually tell when a flame war is coming if users are starting to argue over something opinion-based, like the common Mac VS Windows debate. A good example of this is on a semi-popular Mario website called the FutureNyanCat2002 SMBX Forums. A moderator, KoolKat banned another user, 8bitmushroom, for being rude to the staff. The next day, 8bit was unbanned, and started harrassing KoolKat for "unfair treatment." There's a sure sign that a flame war is brewing in this type of situation.

Preventing a Flame
War
When you detect a flame war, first try to calm down the users. If you're an admin, don't demote any moderators involved, as it will turn them against you. Calmly tell the users that it is OK, and if you're a moderator, lock the flaming threads. If a certain user is being harrassed by a group (in the FNC2002 SMBX Forums Case, KoolKat was being harrassed by a ton of users), then try to defend them politely. If you're a moderator, warn/ban (depending on how strict the rules are) the users who are being cyberbullies, or harrassing another user/group of users.

Stopping an Existing Flame War
Flame wars don't calm down quickly unless it's a simple debate. If it's becoming a complicated mess of swearing, betrayal, and just plain spam, then it's usually harder. In the FNC2002 SMBX Forums case, users were pretty much swearing during the whole argument, blaming each other, and telling stupid lies about each other. If you provide evidence from both sides (PM the "leaders" of each side of the argument for valid proof of anything outside of the public posts), then maybe the users will shut up. If they don't (they probably won't), tell them how immature flame wars are, trying not to be rude. If you're rude, it will get worse. If you're a moderator, ban all users involved with the flame war directly for a day-2 weeks depending on how bad the flame war is.

Conclusion
I hope you are now equipped with the fire extinguishers to put out the flames of a flame war. If you liked, subscribe, diamond, drop a comment, drop a favorite, and all the good stuff. I hope this reduces flame wars on the internet, because flame wars are cyberbullying, and cyberbullying is not good. This probably won't end up in the NYT, or even on the pop reel, but hopefully someone works to stop flame wars.

That also can cause a worse flame war. Mac vs Windows vs Linux.

But my favorite Linux OS isn't out yet. BIOp.8 is still WIP and you can't download it yet.
