Hello fellow minecrafters! My name is Panda, Glorious_Panda and today I wanna tell you about how to make a good minecraft server. I won't cover things like how to actually make it or how to download plugins but instead going to tell you many useful tips and tricks. One more thing before starting, I really recommend playing some popular servers before actually making one. Why? Beacause you can get ideas on what kind of server you should make, what kind of spawn you should have and things like that. Now a good server needs 5 things:

This doesn't means to have good buildings, that's a big part but there is more to it. For example when writting your server information in signs you don't want to make a huge maze with all the rules, information, website, etc. Having too much information will make the player get bored and maybe leave, but having few information will make the player don't know what to do or how to act in your server.

Plugins may be different depending the kind of server you own, there are plugins for all kinds of servers and plugins for only a certain kind of server.For example; if you own a Pvp server you might want to have factions, but if you own a peaceful server, Towny is a good option. But plugins such as WorldEdit/Guard, Orebfuscator, Essentials, NoCheat+ are really nice plugins most servers have. There are also a last group of plugins I classify as Fun plugins, such as Mob Arena, Capture the Flag, Spleef, etc. Now if you just add them all at once it won't do much effect, it's better to add only 1 or 2 first and after around 2 months when people start to get bored of them you add 1 more. This keeps your players always having something to do. Another really important point of plugins is the permissions. You don't want to give unfair commands to your admins, that will make your users leave.

This point is the most important point of all and the because of why many servers close. What many people do is go to random servers and start spamming his/her server ip. This will definitely make people not want to join your server, get mad with you, and you will get banned from the server you were advertising in one second. Now you might be wondering what should I do to make my server known. A really good method of advertising is posting your server mc servers websites, such as PlanetMinecraft.com, MinecraftServers.org, and many more, doing such also has a trick. Making a sticky title will make people want to see more about the server. For example "PVP SERVER GLORIOUXY JOIN NOW" is not sticky and people might just ignore it, but a title more like "Gloriouxy [PvP] [Factions] [Friendly Staff]" will make people more interested in reading about it. Just remember to bump your server everyday. The time when you bump it is also very important. You will get tons more people if you bump it a Friday or Saturday night, than if you post it in the middle of a Tuesday. Giving people 2 or 3 diamonds for voting for your server is also a good strategy.

We all know we can't just host a server 24/7 without receiving a single donation this is why this is very important too. You don't want to give really op(over power) stuff to your donators because then other people will start complaining. But you don't want to give only a diamond or 2 because then you will never get a donation. A good strategy is having many packages. For example, having Eco-Packages worth maybe $1 or $2 that include some diamonds, gold, and 1 set of newbie enchanted diamond armour. Now this may vary depending on the kind of server you own, if you got a peaceful survival server, giving things such as ores and blocks will be better than giving armor and swords. Also, giving commands as a donation rewards can really help, such as /craftingbench or /jump. You could also add a donator Class to Mob Arena, or give donators a diamond shovel at spleef instead of iron one to your donators. A really nice plugin to help you with this is BuyCraft. What this plugin does it allows you to just type /buy in game and it redirects you to a customisable buycraft website.

You always want try to keep your server environment good for all ages. Maybe allowing a little tiny bit of cussing won't do bad, but that's all. Also having unfair staff will want to make the players to leave and rate your server down. You want to be able to trust your staff, also having staff in different time zones is a really good idea so there's always a staff member online or at least most of time. But you don't want to have 10 moderators ad 6 adminds if you only have like 5, 6 members in the day. Also I would really recommend NEVER giving op to anyone unless he is a really good real life friend or something like that. You can never really trust players. Maybe giving op to your Head-Admin that has been part of your staff team for more than a year is fine, but giving all your admins op is not really recommended. And same goes with host.
