PlanetMinecraft is always changing, the people, the names, and the submissions. Lately, I've noticed a major change, one I don't think the community has ignored... at all.
Groups, all through PMC, groups, societies, associations, are popping up. They have always been in the forums (portal hub, pony hub, etc.) but now they are spreading to the whole website. Everybody knows the most famous Angel Block Society, but there are more than just them. Lately, I have noticed more of them.
Just today, I learned of ZaphodX's new The Tutorial Association, a group devoted to helping others. Over time, I have seen many other groups on PMC too.
OliverFrenchie even calls the upcoming big shots of PMC, The Next Generation.
Now, what is the big deal about these? Well, they are becoming a big part of PMC. People are beginning to associate people with their group.
So, why doesn't PMC make groups a real thing. So far, the closest thing to groups being official is the "My channel" on chat, and the fact that in your description you can put "I'm part of the _____ society".
My idea is that, since groups are becoming so big, they can become official:
First, a member, like ZaphodX for example would form a group, and name it The Tutorial Association. Then, she could invite people into it, and they could accept or decline. Next to the notifications flag, there would be another flag, and that lets you know if you have an invitation.
Then, if you accept, on your profile, there would be the name of your group under where it says your level.
Other things:
On the chat lounge, there could be a "Group" page, where only your group would talk.
You would have to be level 25 or above to make a group, just to control the making of it.
Anyone can join a group. (no matter what level)

groups-in-pmc--are-they-becoming-necessary

I would definatelly see that work, i don't think it will cause for competition or anything. The only problem i see is for group leaders of populair groups to be spammed, but that's what they already have now i presume. Anyway, such a 'discover' function without having to search for a particulair blog with a link to members would really work nice. Maybe with a short introduction what the group was made for and such and a channel feature thing, where the groupleader can pick projects/mods/whatever PMC thing and make a reel with stuff to feature.
I coul definatelly see the benefits for just groups of builders who build stuff together but also have their private projects. Like a different way of discovering new people to check out.
But never ever ever compare groups to other groups, so groups as a whole should not have stats what so ever. Because then you get rivalry.
And you can't split it up in categories because a lot of groups will transcend a single categorie. You shouldn't value the one over the other.
The other thing is that it would be a self perputuating popularity movement, if you go and rank them, the popular get more populair. You'd smother the small guys in the community even more.
You should join a group because you want to be a part of them, not for PMC fame, and if you rank them it will end up that way (at the very least faster).
And the groups that would form only for fame would obviously not get very popular.
I think, however, it would be an excellent idea to focus more attention on group in PMC. It would, for one, create a more competitive arena for higher quality projects to flourish.
